(Outlook) Search issue after upgrade to build 15831.20190
Hi,
After we've upgrade Outlook to version 15831.20190, I've noticed an issue when searching. Once I search for something, the Results loading bar keeps scrolling and the search it doesn't return all emails (the emails that are displayed are from a year ago max).
I have tried updating to the latest build (15831.20208) but the problem persists, while restoring version 16.0.15726.20202 the search works correctly. I have Cached Exchange Mode enable for all emails and all accounts that with this issue are hosted in an Exchange 2013 server.
I created a post in the italian Microsoft Community (https://answers.microsoft.com/it-it/outlook_com/forum/all/outlook-problema-ricerca-dopo-aggiornamento-alla/91bf36c0-e8c1-4bf5-8843-6be55bc257f9?messageId=8f5e5400-bf3e-4f51-acc9-824d95bbed82) and it seems that the problem occurs when the mail accounts are hosted on Exchange 2013 or older version. A Microsoft moderator advised me to try asking for support here.
Best Regards,

- VezFigoCopper ContributorI've update Outlook to build 16.0.15928.20196 and now the search works fine. I think the issue is fixed now.

Thanks VezFigo ,
I've now setup to use the current channel instead of the monthly enterprise channel for the updates.
Now I've updated to the Version 2212 Build 16.0.15928.20196, and you are right, the search is working fine again.

I've experienced the same issue where the mailbox indexing stops working after upgrading to EX2019 CU12.
What solved it in my case is to run this command on a regular basis:
Start-MailboxAssistant -Identity <mailbox ID> -AssistantName BigFunnelRetryFeederTimeBasedAssistantThis command needs to be run on the Exchange Server itself.
You can run the following commands before and after the above command to verify it did indeed do something:
Get-MailboxStatistics <mailbox ID> | fl *NotIndex*This will output the 'BigFunnelNotIndexedSize' and 'BigFunnelNotIndexedCount'.
Just run it before and after to compare the numbers, they should be decreasing. However, the numbers most often don't go all the way down to 0. Why is explained in the second bullet point below.
There's still a couple of problems I'm dealing with:
- I have not found an option yet to run the command against the entire mailbox db.
- It will not re-index emails that have not been indexed for too long. I'm not sure what the timeframe is, but at one point the emails that are not indexed, will go into a failure state. Those ones will not be re-indexed with above command and I have yet to find a way to do so.
Hope this helps a little.
*EDIT*
I just found the solution for my second bullet point about not all emails being re-indexed:

Unfortunately, the Exchange server is managed by a third company so I can't run these commands. I'll let them know.
- YannickBaroneCopper ContributorHi,
We have the same issue in our infrastructure.
After Office 365 has been updated to 2211 Build 16.0.15831.20220, the search feature on Outook is not working anymore when it had to search on the server.
It was working fine in 2210 version.
The problem is not on the server side, as it was working fine in Outlook 2210 version and the search is working fine when using webmail.
Do we have to switch to the enterprise annual channel for Office updates ?
This is clearly a recurrent problem with Outlook.

We are having the same issue as you. When we do a search in Outlook (M365 app), the initial search gives a partial list. Normally, we would scroll to the bottom of the list and request more search results, but as the initial search never finishes, we no longer have that option, so we are forced to use a partial list of results. The symptom showed up with version 2211, build 15831.20190. As you highlighted, the next update, build 15831.20208 did not resolve the problem.
Someone suggested rebuilding indices and that made it worse. Rebuilding indices resulted in no search results, just a search animation, you don't even get a partial list. We don't have this problem with versions of Microsoft 2019 Standard/Pro. OWA works fine as well. The problem is limited to the M365 app connecting to Exchange 2013.
The same as you, we are using Exchange 2013 (Build 1497.2/CU23). You may or may not be aware that Exchange support ends in April 2023. I suspect the number of people suffering this problem is small as evidenced by how few people are complaining online. I've only found two other posts about this problem. This is an issue with the M365 app, but as the issue is compatibility with Exchange 2013, we may never see a fix.
We were in the middle of our migration to Exchange 2019 and have told those last few to be moved, this problem will not be fixed and to use OWA as a solution until we migrate them.
I wish you luck on getting resolution to this problem.

Thank you for the clarifications. We're using Office 2019 Professional Plus, is this Outlook the same as the M365 app?

hi, if all clients are on cache mode, you may try to rebuild the index for those clients. Meanwhile, does the issue happen to all clients when you search anything?
- VezFigoCopper Contributor
Hi,
Thank you for the quick response. Yes, this issue happens for all clients and I've already tried to rebuild the index. I think this issue is about the 15831.20190 and later versions because it doesn't happen with the build 15726.20202.
The strange thing is that this problem occurs even when Outlook is offline.
