I have an issue where Excel's drag-to-fill and drag-to-copy/paste don't work. This started suddenly this morning after 2+ years of no issues, with no updates or new installs beforehand.

Symptoms:

• Select a cell, drag the fill handle down - the small preview tooltip correctly shows the next value in the sequence (e.g., 3, 4, 5) as I drag.
• When I release the touchpad, nothing appears in the cell. It stays blank.
• Same problem with drag-and-drop copy/paste within Excel: the drag works, but releasing doesn't commit anything.
• Regular copy → Paste (Ctrl+V) also fails to apply formatting, but Paste Values works fine.
• Fill Series via the ribbon (Home → Fill → Series) works correctly.
• Ctrl+D (fill down) does not work either.

What I've already tried (no change):

• Tested on a brand-new blank workbook
• Excel Safe Mode (excel /safe)
• New local Windows user profile
• Reset Office registry settings (HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Excel)
• Full Office uninstall and reinstall
• sfc /scannow - found and repaired corrupted system files
• DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - completed successfully
• Checked for Group Policy restrictions (none found)
• Checked for interfering background software (only Chrome and Excel running)
• Ruled out touchpad hardware since drag-and-drop works fine in File Explorer
• Checked "Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop" and "Show Paste Options button" settings - both as expected
• Confirmed no touchscreen/stylus, no ClickLock, no ITouch/gesture conflicts

What works:

• Excel Online - drag-fill and paste work perfectly
• Typing values manually
• Paste Values (Ctrl+Alt+V → Values)
• Fill Series dialog

System info:

• Windows, Microsoft Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024
• No recent updates, installs, or policy changes before the issue started

Contacted Microsoft Support directly, who were unable to resolve it and suggested posting here. Any ideas on what else could cause writes to fail specifically on drag-release while click-based commits work fine would be much appreciated.

I cannot access the add-in store in the 365 apps. I worked with Microsoft tech support, however they were unable to help assist. The error message is attached when trying to access from online (omex). And when I try to access it from the app. I need assistance asap. Thank you.

Hi everyone!

I'm a university student and I need to use Python in Excel for some projects I'm working on. The problem is that my current version of Excel doesn't have the option to use Python.

I'm considering getting a Microsoft 365 Individual subscription, but I'm not sure if that would give me access to Python in Excel.

Does anyone know if the Individual subscription is the right option, or if there's anything else I need to do to get access to this feature?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

When I edit a hyperlink in Workbook 1 and select another .XLS workbook as the hyperlink target, the target workbook immediately changes to Read-Only, even though it was not Read-Only before. This happens with different .XLS workbooks.

The same files work perfectly on another PC with an older version of Excel, so the issue appears to be specific to Microsoft 365 Excel.

I have already checked Protected View, File Block Settings, and COM Add-ins, and Microsoft 365 is fully updated. I also tried Office Quick Repair.

Has anyone experienced the same issue or found a solution?

Hi. 

I don't know what has happened, but I have been forced to register for the Excel forum. It wouldn't let me use my user ID already set up, so I have had to use a new one. Presumably the old profile is still there, which is why I can't re-register using that. Plus, I don't see a button to raise a new question.

Has something changed at your end? Why am I seeing these differences? Can I be reunited with my previously existing profile?

Title: Excel Sheet Name (in Thai font) are super small and hard to read.

Issue:
When naming a sheet name in Thai, the font becomes small and difficult to read. When clicking the sheet name to to edit/rename it comes the correct size. The English font is not effected at all, even when having a combination of English and Thai letters the Thai letter characters become small while the English characters stay a normal size. Shown in picture 1 are the Thai font in a normal cell with the normal font sizing and the sheet names with only English, only Thai, and a combination of both languages and the Thai font is significantly smaller than the English font.  In picture 2 when selecting the sheet name shows the font becomes the normal sizing.
This has occurred in two other computers, making this the third computer to see this problem. This started from the first two computer about two weeks ago and this computer today.

Additional details:
Having scouring the webs and finding similar problems and trying the solutions in those posts with no effect.
1) Changing the system region to Thailand and changing the Language for non-Unicode programs to Thai.
2) Changing the display setting scaling didn't do anything.
3) Updating as well as uninstalling recent update has not done anything.
4) Accessing the registry in reg edit hasn't solved the issue either.
5) Having contacted a live chat in the Microsoft Support and giving them remote access to see if they can solve the problem. They tried a variety of methods and failed and referred me to this community.

Are there any solutions for this or is this a problem on Excel's side and not "fixable" by the user and if so how would one file a ticket to address this problem.

Title: Excel (Microsoft 365 on Windows 11) corrupts local files created in previous Microsoft 365 versions after first re-save

Environment:

- OS: Windows 11 (fully updated)

- App: Excel, Microsoft 365 (current version/build — please advise how to pull exact build if needed)

- File type: .xlsx, created locally in a previous version of Microsoft 365 Excel

- File location: Local drive (same folder throughout; file is not moved or renamed)

Issue summary:

Excel files created in an earlier Microsoft 365 version become corrupted after being opened, edited, and saved once in the current Microsoft 365 version. The file opens fine the first time, but on the next open attempt from the same location it fails with a file format mismatch error.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Take an .xlsx file that was created and saved in a previous version of Microsoft 365 Excel.

2. Open the file in the current Microsoft 365 Excel on Windows 11. The file opens normally.

3. Do your work, save, and close the file.

4. Attempt to reopen the same file from the same location.

Expected result:

The file opens normally, as it did the first time.

Actual result:

The file fails to open and Excel displays the following error:

"This workbook couldn't be opened because the file format may not be matching with the file extension. To resolve this issue, try restoring your file to a previous version. Click the link below for step-by-step instructions."

The error dialog includes "Restore a previous version" and "Give Feedback to Microsoft" links.

Additional details:

- This is reproducible and has affected multiple files, not a one-off.

- The file is not open in another application or locked by OneDrive sync at the time of reopening.

- Restoring a previous version recovers the file, but any edits made in the current version are lost — so this is causing real data loss.

Questions for the community / Microsoft:

1. Is this a known issue with the current Microsoft 365 Excel build on Windows 11 when handling files created in earlier builds?

2. Is there a recommended workaround (e.g., Save As to a new file, converting the file format, or rolling back the Office build) until a fix is released?

3. How can I capture logs or file samples to help Microsoft diagnose this?

Any guidance would be appreciated. Happy to provide additional repro details.

Hi everyone, I'm having an issue in Excel 365, which I've also noticed in Excel 2019 and Excel 2021. It turns out that when typing a formula or function, there are times when Excel doesn't calculate the result and simply displays the text as it is—for example, =SUM(A1:A10).

I've already checked that the cell format is set to Number/General and verified that the 'Show Formulas' option is turned off, but I still can't find the root of the problem.

It's worth mentioning that this issue is intermittent and only happens on rare occasions, both in existing and new workbooks, and it doesn't always happen with the same functions. Is this a known bug or some kind of anomaly in Excel?

Hello my excel workbook on my mac air is locked and it wont let me or give me an option to unlock all the files. is there a way to be able to help me unlock them? any information help please and thank you!!
