Excel not working properly since updating to Windows 11
Hi,
Since I have updated my PC to windows 11 Excel has not been working properly. Every 5 min the sheets seem to be unresponsive when I click on a tab or anywhere on the excel page. To make it work again I have to constantly reduce the window and reopen it. This is very frustrating as it happens very often. I have tried to start excel in safe mode or disable add-ins but the bug continues.
Thank you

- JohnBrowning9Copper ContributorI am having the same problem.
Did we ever find out if anyone had an e'fin clue?
Why do they not respond to these issues and at least acknowledge they are happening?- DerflawCopper Contributor
Because it's Microsuck. Their stuff works perfectly every time didn't you know that? Just ask them. Nothing is ever their fault and at some point in the future, some obscured update will be sent without ever having acknowledged there was a problem to begin with. It will just miraculously go away. Probably not until somebody has the money to sue them for the aggravation and down time though. That wouldn't be cost effective. Had no problems on the Win 10 PC with any M365 apps. Was punished with Win 11 for buying a new laptop and now I get to spend a good portion of my workday restarting M365 apps. Can't afford a Mac or I'd abandon Microsuck altogether.
- danrectorCopper ContributorI have the exact same symptoms except they seem to be directly related to the Azure DevOps Excel Add-in. When I'm on the "Team" tab it does it every few seconds. When I move off that tab it seems to work okay. But the minimize and maximize does cure it the same as described here. I think I will try and use this with support and see if I can sir the pot.

Hi, I think the problem is in the print spooler service. Because every time excel saves it always accesses that service. Try stopping the print spooler service.
But I don't know why MS-Office always accesses the service every time, such as when changing the font size, changing the font type, and etc. - HD787Copper Contributor
Well this is driving me nuts. Anyone at MS with a effin' clue?

I managed to get rid of the issue by going to - Options/Advanced/Display/ and tick the 'Disable hardware graphics acceleration'. Excel seems to be working as normal now with it disabled, it was unusable before, slow and unresponsive and it didn't register where the cursor was on the screen.
- Jeff_CPACopper ContributorSame problem here (cells not responding to mouse clicks on a too-frequent basis), and I'm also getting the occasional issue of sheets not rendering properly, so I've been wondering if its an issue with Excel/NVidia GPUs.
Out of curiosity - what GPU are you running?
I'm running NVidia A2000 on my laptop, and NVidia A4000 at my desk when plugged in to my external GPU & big monitors.
Trying the 'disable hardware acceleration' now... - davidlaughterCopper ContributorI think thay may have worked for me. Running office 365. Thank you DropxLr!
- PDAmanCopper ContributorIt appears that that option was removed from all office apps last year. So your 365 must not have been updated for some time?
- PDAmanCopper Contributor
That is Great!
However, I am unable to find that option in my Excel which is office 365, the latest version.
Under Option/Advanced/Display, no such option exists.
Could you show us a screenshot?

I updated to Windows 11 several months ago and everything seemed to be working fine on my Office 365, but just today, the display when I use Excel seems to have gone all buggy. Like others on this thread, after I press "Enter" upon inputting data or text in a cell, the text goes white, and doesn't show up again until I minimize the window and enlarge it again. The other strange thing that is happening now is that the row number next to cells which have data in them along with the column letters along the top are "whited out" too. These remain unreadable even after the minimizing-enlarging step. I have another computer that is still operating on Windows 10 and it has no such problems, so it appears to be some kind of incompatibility with Windows 11. Why it suddenly started acting up like this after several months of normal use is a real mystery.

Juchikura I am experiencing the same sort of problem with Excel 365, but in addition the entire bottom row of worksheet tabs is missing/whited-out. There are left and right arrows which don't function clearly, and ellipses (three dots)... When the row and column labels get whited-out (which for me happens when the mouse is moved over them) and then I scroll the worksheet vertically or horizontally, the whited-out row and column labels get repeated in a similar pattern across the newly exposed rows or columns. There is no way to work in these conditions! I cannot even get to the correct worksheet because those tabs are missing/whited-out for selection. This all started happening just three days ago, shortly after installing Windows 11. I look forward to discovering a solution; I will try repairing Office / Excel 365.
...and now, without having done anything, the problem seems to have suddenly disappeared. Nice! Yet so irritating, not knowing if it will just "jump back into chaos" tomorrow...
- DeletedI was facing the exact same issue. It really drove me mad!
I found a work around: the file I was working with was stored on Google Drive. As soon as I moved the file to my local hard drive the problem was gone.
For some reason this creates an issue... I never tried to save the file on One Drive.
My guess is, that if the same problem occurs there as well, then it has something to do with storing files in the cloud. If it works like a charm with One Drive, then it just might be an issue with Google Drive.
Let me know if it worked for you...- davidlaughterCopper Contributor
Unfortnately this happens to files stored locally, so definitely not a cloud based issue. Oil4U, if you are not a Microsoft employee, you should be one, as you pawn that off on other software very well, just like a pro!

Having the exact same issues, tired every option commented on with fresh installs, removing add-ins, everything.... no change.
Seems to happen more with older more complicated workbooks with lots of references.... seems to be a cache issue possibly as well, as when i clear the cache it goes away for a short time, then returns within 48 hours of work....
Hopefully microsoft takes less than 2 years to solve this issue ๐

Hi David,
Thank you for your reply. How did you clear cache exactly? Once every 48 hours is much better than having a bug every 5 minutes.
Kind regards,
Alessandro
- davidlaughterCopper ContributorSimple google search.... you must be a microsoft employee ๐

I have the exact same problem since my laptop was automatically updated to Windows 11. My income revolves around Excel, as I am in Finance. When Excel becomes unresponsive the application starts to flicker. I tried everything that has been suggested on various platforms and nothing works. It cannot be applications on the computer, as the applications were installed long before Windows 11 launched.
Another problem I face is Windows Explorer. I need to restart it through Task Manager every time I click on an item in a folder as it freezes and then crashes.
It is extremely frustrating and Microsoft cannot take responsibility, blaming it on everything besides their software.

I resolved my issue.
It was the external monitor I have been using for the last 6 years. The display card or driver is not compatible with Windows 11, so each time I moved a spreadsheet over to the second monitor, excel crashed.
It was a theory at first, and it was tested by connecting a new monitor. It's been two days and I have not had any issues. It used to happen every couple of minutes.
Who knew.
- leastevenCopper Contributor
Marissa_Hattingh thankyou so much it is the external monitor that causes the issue. I've been trying every suggestion for months with no luck.
As soon as I read your post I moved the spreadsheet down to my laptop screen and it works perfectly now.

Hello
I faced the exact issue without knowing the exact cause till half an hour ago only.
This issue started to happen since one month exactly and I did everything you can imagine by uninstalling the office itself 5 or 6 times and clearing the cache and installing a different versions of Microsoft office till I noticed that from a month I installed Foxit pdf editor and it was appearing beside the help tab inside the excel as usual same the Acrobat.
I digged deeply till I found the final solution
Here are the steps:
1- Go to File/Options/Add-ins
2- Manage in the bottom
3- Choose COM Add-ins
4- Uncheck any box including the pdf program you are using
5- It should be solved by now
Try and give me your feedback
ThanksSantero10

I have had problems similar to those described in these posts and they started to appear after one of the last two Win 11 automatic updates. Disabling the graphics accelerator as suggested by one of the posters worked for me. It sped up scrolling through the file significantly, but more importantly, I can now again read the bottom of the display. (Btw, I never had a cell lock up problem so I canโt comment on that issue).

Hossam_El_Mahdy you are a real GENIUS!! PDF Editor plugin was the problem. Thank you guy, you saved me!!
- jdsjamulCopper Contributor
Garagolo Would you be able to post the response that you said was the solution? I have a Foxit PDF Creator COM Add-in (not plug in). Is that what he's referring to? I have to figure out how to disable it as it serves no purpose. If it turns out to be the reason for a ton of frustration or a long period of time, I will not be happy with Foxit.
- Santero10Copper Contributor
Thank you for your reply and help. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the problem on my end as I don't have any plug-in to deactivate.
- Hossam_El_MahdyCopper Contributor
I am sorry to hear that, I replied because I faced exactly the same problem with all its details and when I found the solution, I wrote immediately.
I hope you can find the answer ๐
Best of Luck Santero10
