Everything opens as "Read only" when opening from the in app Home or Recent section.

When I open an Excel file (or any office file) from within the Open dialog box via the, Home, Recent, Pinned and Shared with me sections, the file always opens read only. I'm then forced to rename the file to keep any changes made.

If I open a file directly from its one drive location (or via the Mac OS Recent Items function) it opens normally and autosaves as it should whilst I work.

Is there something I can do to turn off the read only default when using the MS in-app dialog box?

Hey jondillon, I figured it out!
The cache folders stored on your Mac are causing this. I went to Finder> hold down "Option" and Library will appear - click on Library>Caches

Then find any folder that starts with com.microsoft and then, any file that starts with the word "Cache" just send to the Trash.

I went back to the powerpoint files I was trying to open from Teams and it opened perfectly normally, NOT in Read-Only anymore.

Oops I forgot to include a step.

Finder>Go> THEN hold down Option and Library will appear.

      Good luck!

Rubes_SIA Hi Ruby, hello from Paris,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply. It's fixed the issue when opening from inside Teams but it's still bugging out when I open anything from the in-app recent list. But its a win for me.

        Have a great weekend.

        Jon

I am having this same problem. I open a file from teams, it opens in the app on my computer but in read-only mode. Then I try from finder and it opens fine. Perhaps it has something to do with opening files locally from an app/the internet, but I don't know how to change those permissions.

Rubes_SIA suggested the file may be opening from the internet (thanks!) so I turned of "connected experiences" in preferences > privacy and now the problem is solved.
