countif bad count

Hello All,

Im attempting to count personnel in two different columns and would like any duplicate for given date to be counted once.

Im currently using =COUNTIF(A2:A32,"Joe") for each column and have to manually reconcile. =COUNTIFs(A2:A32,"Joe",C2:C32,"Joe") doesn't do it either, I think this counts duplicates.

 Your help is greatly appreciated!

Detlef_Lewin Thank you for the reply. Is there a place to enter the specific person I'm looking to count? Im not sure what is being counted with this formula. I'd like to know how many rows (in columns A & C) "Joe " is being counted. Thanks for the help.

If you are counting "Joe" then you are not counting unique values.

        So, what's it gonna be?
