Cell references on other sheets

Using formulas accross multiple sheets is currently more difficult and tidious than it could be (desktop version).

Consider a case where a formula is typed at A1 in Sheet1.

  1. Switching sheets while having a cell "open" (formula bar clicked) will close the cell if it does not expect a new reference. -> Leads to e.g. not being able to find the refered cell of the formula.
  2. In the cases where the formula bar stays open, such as "=Sheet1!A2+Sheet2!A2+" the targeted cells will only be highlighted on the same sheet that the formula is typed on. However, if the targeted range is a range in a table the highlighting works on other sheets aswell.

Is this a bug or intended behaviour? Certain seems like a bug.

I'm afraid this is how Excel has behaved for decades. Nothing new here. I wonder how you envision highlighting a cell that is on another worksheet?

I mean, it is quite clear and simple how the highliting could look like. The same way as highlights work on the same sheet as the where the function is written. Just a colored box around the location or at least a dotted line as there is with target cells in chart data. Google sheets also has this functionality.

I'm confused. How would you see a cell highlight if that cell is not on the sheet you are looking at? Do you have two windows open to the same file?
