Cell references on other sheets
I'm afraid this is how Excel has behaved for decades. Nothing new here. I wonder how you envision highlighting a cell that is on another worksheet?
I mean, it is quite clear and simple how the highliting could look like. The same way as highlights work on the same sheet as the where the function is written. Just a colored box around the location or at least a dotted line as there is with target cells in chart data. Google sheets also has this functionality.

I'm confused. How would you see a cell highlight if that cell is not on the sheet you are looking at? Do you have two windows open to the same file?

look at the OP images. The formula in Cell A1 on Sheet1 is selected and you can see cell A2 on that sheet is part of the formula. Then they click on Sheet2 and you can see Column1 of Table1 is highlighted as it also part of that formula but cell A2 on Sheet2, which is also part of that formula is NOT highlighted.
I agree with the OP that this looks like a bug. but unfortunately this is not the place to report bugs. in excel goto help and then feedback and then 'Report a problem'
