'Work - Edge' Desktop Shortcut Reappears after deleting and reopening Edge Browser
End user removes the spam Desktop shortcut labeled 'Work - Edge':
Once they reopen the Edge browser, the app shortcut reappears.
Hi Everyone - The fix for this was released to Microsoft Edge Beta Version 117.0.2045.12. If you have access to the Beta Channel, please test and let us know if the issue has been resolved.
The fix should also be included in the next Stable release, which should be later this week if there are no delays. Thanks!

The only solution I found right now is to block syncing of .lnk files from OneDrive and SharePoint. This causes some of our users to have a bunch of red x's on their desktop short cuts, but other than that has stopped OneDrive from recreating the shortcut repeatedly. Hopefully they'll sort this out soon.

RandomInternetPerson I wouldn't use this workaround as it might cause syncing issues. Happened to us and we had to unblock .lnk files.
- JASONPEELCopper ContributorWe've been doing this for a while for some users for *Chrome*.lnk files as we had some users have duplicates of chrome happening for a couple years now. We've changed it so now the policy includes *edge*.lnk and *teams*.lnk for all staff and no issues but calls for the duplicates have pretty much stopped.
- netipmbrCopper ContributorStill no fix...

This is an incredibly frustrating issue, we have over 1700 copies of the 'Work' Profile syncing across multiple PC's... Is there a fix that does not involve running scripts on every PC? What a shambles -

It is not a fix, but more of a temporary workaround until an actual fix is developed.
I have found that if you turn off the briefcare in Edge Browser (Settings >Appearance> Briefcase (just under theme). Restart the browser. Then delete all of the duplicated links, it has stopped on the vast majority of my users computers. I also set up a logon script, nothing more than a batch file, that deletes the files at %userprofile%\onedrive-unit\desktop\work*.lnk It will remove any created links each time the computer starts or the user logs on.
Hopefully a full solution is found and pushed out with patching soon. As I said, this is only a work around that does seem to work for the majority of my users. Hope it helps.

What is the best way to push this setting to my PCs in Azure AD?
"Disabling the Briefcase apperance to the devices"
- MonoyerDCopper Contributorpowershell script to block link creation and perform cleaning. It must be executed on your entire fleet
New-Item -Path "Registry::HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge" -Force
Set-ItemProperty -Path "Registry::HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge" -Name "EdgeWorkspacesEnabled" -Value 0 -Type DWORD
cd /
cd users

Write-Host $file
$Folder = "\users\$item\OneDrive - *******\bureau"

Set-Location $Folder

}
cd /users
}- Pookie1302Copper ContributorThis did nothing for me sadly.
- MonoyerDCopper ContributorThis surprises me, we applied this strategy to 27 of our Multi PC sessions. Before this update we had a maximum of 86,000 EDGE shortcuts on desktops.
Since then no problems have been reported to us.
- chrisco341Brass ContributorI tested this registry key on one of my machines and it did not seem to change the Show Briefcase setting.

Completely agree, this doesn't change anything in terms of the edge interface but technically no link has been generated on our instance for almost 48 hours

I have created my own work around and fix until an actual fix can be taken care of.
GPO created that run every 4 hours, checks the current user, onedrive / desktop and deletes work - edge*.lnk
Also, Open Edge, Settings and more, Settings, Appearance. Turn off Show Briefcase icon on work profiles.
Turning off the show briefcase helped stop the replication. The GPO with cmd line process cleaned up and keeps the system clean.
So far this has done a good job at keeping a large number of systems clean.

We have the same problem and were are a primary school group. It's an absolute disaster.
Some of our young students have hundreds of these shortcuts. We use shared computers. Some teachers tried to update Edge on every computer but the problem is still there. Is there a way to turn of Edge Work through intune? We don't need this. I get tickets and phone calls from desperate staff members.
- JASONPEELCopper ContributorWe are also seeing this for some users which Im thinking are signing into 2 computers at the same time. We do use OneDrive as well. We do have an open support call with MS, but with the onedrive teams which gave me this posting. In the process of trying to clean up the mess as the calls come in. First we clean up the users Onedrive, if theyre signed into a pc, those files do get removed from the pc. We then have to track down every pc the user has signed into and remove the files from there as well or they just sync back up to Onedrive.
We had a similar issue with Chrome and Teams shortcuts and I ended up pushing out some onedrive settings that block onedrive from syncing the shortcuts. Looks like I'll be doing the same for these.
All this for Edge for Work that noone asked for and noway to be disabled throughout our tenant that I know of.- Robert_T2000Brass ContributorThe frustrating part is I can't see any difference in the shortcut other than the Briefcase graphic. The TARGET is identical to the non-briefcase icon and nothing changes when it gets recreated after every Edge launch. What's the point of updating the icon if nothing changes?
TARGET = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --profile-directory="Default"- Keith_B2023Copper ContributorThere is something that is running even when Edge is closed that is locking the files in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default
If you try to change the Edge icon file with the work profile set, it reverts. Once you change the setting in Edge, turning Work off, that icon file changes back.

I would like to add that this is not exclusive to OneDrive - we're using Egnyte, a competitive cloud platform and experiencing this same issue. It seems to affect those with Edge Business and opening the browser simultaneously on multiple devices.
- Robert_T2000Brass ContributorI believe I can summarize the issue. This only occurs if a user has Edge Business running on two computers and they are syncing the computers with OneDrive. The Edge Business shortcut icon is updated every time Edge is closed. Occasionally the icon is locked by Edge which doesn't allow it to be overwritten by the other instance. To consistently cause the issue, close Edge on both computers within a few seconds of each other the duplicate icons will always be created.
The only solution until Microsoft changes this icon creation routine is to move away from Edge Business by turning off the Briefcase option in SETTINGS > APPEARANCE.- Keith_B2023Copper ContributorIt also happens on VDI with OneDrive running and backing up the user's Desktop folder. While in VDI there is no other instance of Edge running as these are non-persistant desktops and people are only allowed to log into 1 desktop at a time, as set forth in VMware. There could be an oddity that OneDrive locks the shortcut while "syncing" causing Edge to create a new shortcut. I feel the solution would be to remove the "Profiles" function from Edge all together. If you are using Edge for business, in a business environment, then you shouldnt be loading your personal profile. That is just asking for trouble. Just my 2 cents.

Microsoft
Keith_B2023 Robert_T2000 Thank you both for the detailed descriptions! After updating to Version 116.0.1938.69, what is the name of the new shortcuts being created? Is it Work – Edge or something different? If you have a screenshot, that would be great as well.

- Robert_T2000Brass ContributorI found a workaround. Turn off the briefcase option in Edge.
Open SETTINGS > APPEARANCE and turn off "Show Briefcase Icon on work profiles." Then restart Edge.
You'll need to delete the duplicate icons, but new ones will not be created.- JeroenThaAdminCopper ContributorThanks for sharing this. I'll be back if this didn't help... 😛
- JedediahJumblCopper ContributorOn an initial control case of one , this does seem to have worked for me. I'll edit or re-comment if it proves to not be the ticket.
- JedediahJumblCopper Contributor
JedediahJumbl -- as a follow up, the deactivation of the "Briefcase" option within the user's Edge, even only on one of their computers rather than both, appears to have fixed the issue for my user. I haven't been notified by staff or the user of the problem re-appearing.
- Keith_B2023Copper ContributorWish there was a way to control that as an Admin for our end users. Huge fail on MS's part.
