Hello everyone, I don't know if this issue is still happening for a lot of people, but it happened with me yesterday and I just found out today what is causing it.
If you go to Edge settings and search for Download, look for the option called: Microsoft Defender SmartScreen and if it's on, toggle it off. This option is what was making my Edge take too long to start new downloads.
I hope this was helpful to someone.- RetroboyCopper Contributor
Why cant microsoft never make anything reliable, always riddled with bugs, windows 10 and 11 as an OS are still a pain to navigate to exactly where you need, like we used to be able to, but no, we are forced with the basic mobile os front end.
edge and its forced none sense and ive noticed evertime i download a file, it takes ages for it to change from the OPEN and SAVE AS screen to actually show the file download progress bar after already telling it to save the file.
Then it can sometimes take upto 5 minutes for it to actually change.
Then we have its tab screen, after telling it what you want to see, but no, it forces everything in the media and news when its not even selected.
- vitoproCopper Contributoryou need disable SmartScreen to Microsoft Edge from Windows Security \ Check App and Browser. If you have antivirus it's possible have same feature actived.

Hey folks! Thanks for reporting back what was causing this for you. It sounds like folks hitting this all have the Malwarebytes extension enabled. If you don't have that extension, check for any other antivirus extensions that may be contributing here. If anyone's running into this even after disabling extensions, please let me know! Otherwise, it might be worth reaching out to the developer to let them know the extension isn't behaving as expected.

A coworker is having this same problem. When he accesses a file download link on our internal team website there is this long delay and CPU usage spikes on msedge.exe.
None of the rest of us on the team are seeing this behavior, and other browsers on his machines (FireFox, IE) don't have the problem.
Unfortunately, our IT dept disabled the Alt+Shift+I Send Feedback feature, so he can't send that. I wouldn't be surprised if the problem is caused by one of the 50 (exaggeration?) McAfee exe's running on our machines, or Carbon Black, as these are a constant source of irritation. However, usually when that's the case you can see CPU Usage spike on one of those processes too, and that's not happening.
Also, 6 other people with essentially identical machine, OS, and settings are not seeing the same issue.
Any ideas on things we can do to debug this issue?
OS : Windows 10 19042.1645
Edge: 99.0.1150.55
- Yannick1285Brass ContributorHello everyone,
I'm having this issue when I try to download any files with Edge version 103.0.1264.44.
I have recorded the network traffic on both my computer and network firewall and it appearded that my computer tried to reach some public IP address from Microsoft directly without using our proxy.
When I disable Smartscreen option in Edge, the download is instant.
I don't understand why the Smartscreen functionnality in Edge doesn't use the proxy configuration. I didn't found anything on GPO settings regarding a proxy for Smatscreen.
Anyone has an idea ?

Hi Alexandra-R, I've exactly the same issue.
I'm using version 99.0.1150.39 with no extensions at all and when pressing the download option (it happened also when downloading from an on-prem web applications) it takes between 5-10 seconds untill I can see the download startes in the browser and I'm talking about really small files - up to 100K.
The weird thing is that it doesn't happend to all of the org users.
Trying cleadning the browsing data or using in private mode didn't help.

pazsol6062 you need disable SmartScreen to Microsoft Edge from Windows Security \ Check App and Browser. If you have antivirus it's possible have same feature actived.
- Kent_AkselsenCopper ContributorAlexandra,
I've confirmed that Malwarebytes Browser Guard is the cause of the slowdown in saving files. I had about 20 seconds delay after choosing "Save Link As" or "Save Image As" (in both Edge and Chrome browsers) before the download dialog box appeared.
I removed Malwarebytes Browser Guard from Chrome and the slowdown was gone. The download dialog box appeared in less than one second.
I downloaded a fresh install of Malwarebytes Browser Guard for Chrome and the slowdown was back. I tried pausing Malwarebytes Browser Guard on a web site and the slowdown was still there.- ThisIsSuchAPain20Copper ContributorI DO NOT have Malwarbytes installed, never have - this is NOT my issue

Mine does this also, just started after a recent update. Sometimes up to 30 seconds to display the 'file save as' dialog box. Edge only, no issues with other apps.

ratchetsup Interesting that you are posting this. I am having the exact same problem with image and program downloads. It started exactly yesterday. Right-clicking "Save As" (Desktop, Documents, whatever folder) results in a LONG delay of around 10 seconds. I have:
1) Scanned For Malware or Viruses.
2) Used SFC and CHKDSK with no errors reported.
3)Tried various options like restarting File Explorer as detailed here No success https://windowsreport.com/file-explorer-slow-windows-10/
4) Threw in that towel and reset the PC (using Recovery option to keep files, folders, and settings) and reinstalled programs one by one STILL have the same problem. Checked my SSD drive and no bad clusters.
5) This occurred in both EDGE and Google Chrome. Any forthcoming solutions appreciated.

Hi, what version of Edge are you in?
In which Windows build?
Maybe you just need to download the update?- icyred64Copper ContributorI had the second last update from edge and it was doing the problem so I did an update to 97.0.1072.69 and its still doing the same problem. As for windows its up to date as well 22000.438.

icyred64 I was able to fix it by disabling malwarebytes extension. I would try disabling all your extensions then trying one by one which is causing it. Best of luck!
