Edge keeps signing me out
Since a week or two, Microsoft Edge signs me out of my MS account.
The top left account menu shows orange lettering, and when I click it, it reports that it can't sync because it needs to confirm my identity (first screenshot). I can then click Sign In, and don't need to enter my password or anything, just click Continue (2nd screenshot).
But pretty soon (like the next day, or sometimes even later the same day) the same thing happens again.
It never happened before two weeks ago. I'm not aware of any changes to my system or my account that preceded this issue. It's the same account I've used for years, and the password and 2-factor haven't changed in months.
What could be causing this, and how do I fix it?
ETA: Possibly related, because I noticed it at the same time and it seems to occur at the same moments: Microsoft Security and Defender stop responding. Both still show their icons in the systray, but neither opens when clicked. Only way to get around that is to kill all related process or reboot the system. And Security keeps showing the same notifications I've dismissed over and over again.
florismkleijne HP Elitebook laptop, Windows 11 (language Norwegian), changed from 365 work account to personal 365 account earlier this year. Login to Windows with personal account. Had this problem with Microsoft Edge signing me out all the time.
Possible solution: Opened Settings, Accounts, Login options, deleted all Hello options (face recognition, finger print and PIN). Recreated these Hello options. I guess there was a connection to my earlier work account in these settings. After restart of laptop there is no problem with Edge signing me out (so far so good day at one). Will report back later this week.
- Dvorak-StepanCopper ContributorTry:
Microsoft Edge - Settings - Profiles - Profile settings - Automatically sign in to Microsoft Edge- florismkleijneBrass ContributorThat simple? That would be great!
However, I'm waiting to see if this really resolves it. Mostly because I've never seen that option before, and I have definitely not turned it off recently, and still the issue popped up recently.
In any case, thanks for your response.- Dvorak-StepanCopper Contributor
I have the same problem as you. Microsoft Edge logs me out every time I restart my PC. Today when I was looking for the reason, I noticed this new setting. Actually there is a whole profiles section added. So I'm also waiting to see if this will work.
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorSearched Google some more, found a page where someone suggested clearing out Credentials Manager from all MS-related entries might do the trick. Tried that. Problem hasn't recurred since. So it might be a matter of corrupt/outdated credentials.

Unfortunately, the problem has returned, though less frequently than before. Through other channels, I've heard suggested that a recent update may be the culprit. If so, I'm now hoping a fix is forthcoming in the near future.
- ramonpercinaCopper ContributorWhat do you mean with Credentials Manager? Passwords in edge wallet?
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorCredentials Manager is a Control Panel item where you can manage stored credentials. Go to the classic Control Panel from the Start Menu, and you'll see it there.

Leaving them off first, see what Edge does; recreating them when I've established that Edge stays signed in without them.
- SagaPerCopper ContributorMy solution is still working. I guess this was related to the use of an earlier work account in my laptop. Looks good at the moment.
- SagaPerCopper ContributorMy solution still works on day two. 🙂

I'll give it to next weekend, and if it's still fixed then, I'll test what happens when I re-enable Hello.
- MarcinGrzybekCopper ContributorDo you mean to remove "Windows Hello PIN" option? If so then I'd be required to use the usual password, right?
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorThat's it: remove facial recognition and fingerprint if you have configured those, then pin. While those are removed, sign in with your password. But once you've seen that Edge stays signed in, you can re-enable pin (and facial/fingerprint) and the problem should stay away.
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorPS: It's spreading, or so it seems. Now OneDrive reports it's been signed out almost daily.
- PGPPCCopper ContributorThe very same problem here on two laptops. For two, maybe three weeks now. No solution found so far.

In the end I deleted the entire user settings folder, created a completely new profile and everything is working fine so far.
:TaskKillMsEdge TaskKill /t /f /im "msedge.exe" If Not %ErrorLevel% == 128 TimeOut 1 & GoTo TaskKillMsEdge RmDir /s /q "%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data"
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorTried that too, thanks!
So far, so good: had multiple signouts per day, and after doing this cleanup, none yet. Will report back in a couple of days.
- ser1usCopper ContributorExact same issue. Just finished a complete re-install from scratch with the ISO. After the first reboot Edge gives me the "Sign in" treatment again. I have to agree that this has since gotten worse. I own another four machine and it slowly starts to show itself more and more. First, it was Edge, now it started to happen with Office Apps as well as the MS Store... it's really really frustrating.
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorGood to know that the ISO reinstall doesn't fix it, saves me a lot of hassle. Thanks!
- ser1usCopper ContributorNow it starts to happen with the new Outlook app too. It just starts to log me out there as well.
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorYeah, I get the same in Excel and Word, though less frequently than in Edge. Which makes me think that deleting the Edge profile etc. cannot be a permanent fix.
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorJust did the ISO reinstall as well, to fix a (probably) unrelated issue: Windows Security wouldn't open. So far, Edge/Office/OneDrive/Store are keeping me signed in. So in my case, it may actually be a solution for this issue as well.

florismkleijne Good luck! For me it didn't solve anything. Now Outlook is getting on my nerves, it signs me out every couple of minutes.
- ramonpercinaCopper Contributorhi
i have same issue
have you solved it? - ser1usCopper Contributor
florismkleijne Just as a heads up. I updated the optional update (yes, the one with the start menu ads) and I had to re-authenticate pretty much everything. But since then it looks good, no more login prompts so far. Fingers crossed 😮
- dodazzoCopper ContributorHi everyone,
I have the same exact problem as well. Luckily, I'm having problems with Edge only, it signs me out like once a day, quite frustrating. I'm not getting into the struggle of reinstalling Windows or stuff like that, I still have nightmares from my last Windows pc. I genuinely believe this is my last Windows pc tbh: this is no UX, it's just a nightmare on all fronts.- florismkleijneBrass ContributorI felt the same about the prospect of reinstalling Windows, dodazzo, but seriously: it was a breeze. Download the ISO, mount the ISO, run Setup, choose to keep files, apps, and settings, and give it half an hour. One hundred percent of my apps had retained their settings. After the reinstall, the system was exactly the same as before, except for the elimination of my problems.
- _dsimonCopper ContributorA similar thing is going on with my PC. Edge, Skype and even Microsoft To Do keep signing me out every day. After reading all the replies, I think I am not even going to try to fix it.

In my case, the signing out started when I used my "work" account to sign-in to the office 365 (I use my personal account to log-in to the computer). Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution yet.

Same issue here, since a few weeks. Edge keep signing me out...
