Edge keeps signing me out
Since a week or two, Microsoft Edge signs me out of my MS account.
The top left account menu shows orange lettering, and when I click it, it reports that it can't sync because it needs to confirm my identity (first screenshot). I can then click Sign In, and don't need to enter my password or anything, just click Continue (2nd screenshot).
But pretty soon (like the next day, or sometimes even later the same day) the same thing happens again.
It never happened before two weeks ago. I'm not aware of any changes to my system or my account that preceded this issue. It's the same account I've used for years, and the password and 2-factor haven't changed in months.
What could be causing this, and how do I fix it?
ETA: Possibly related, because I noticed it at the same time and it seems to occur at the same moments: Microsoft Security and Defender stop responding. Both still show their icons in the systray, but neither opens when clicked. Only way to get around that is to kill all related process or reboot the system. And Security keeps showing the same notifications I've dismissed over and over again.
florismkleijne HP Elitebook laptop, Windows 11 (language Norwegian), changed from 365 work account to personal 365 account earlier this year. Login to Windows with personal account. Had this problem with Microsoft Edge signing me out all the time.
Possible solution: Opened Settings, Accounts, Login options, deleted all Hello options (face recognition, finger print and PIN). Recreated these Hello options. I guess there was a connection to my earlier work account in these settings. After restart of laptop there is no problem with Edge signing me out (so far so good day at one). Will report back later this week.

its now even worse, the log back in button opens the SSO prompt, but then it just closes again and doesnt log you in... so edge synchronisation is now unuseable for me

what version of windows 11 do you have , open start and type winver then enter to find out,
latest is 24h2 , there are now 4 releases,
what version of edge do you have open 3 dots in edge open settings go to about Microsoft edge,
latest is Version 131.0.2903.63 (Official build) (64-bit)
if dont have latest win 11 24h2 can manually force the update here,
if all up to date , create a new user account , if no go ,, google how to reset windows 11
- jayojyotiroyCopper ContributorAdding myself in this thread because I was thinking that my systems were going crazy and my account was getting hacked.
- MartinoMhCopper ContributorAdding myself to the thread hoping for updates.
Exact same issue as others, no solutions.
I may add that I use Skype on my PC and even that logs out apparently at random.- computerdave911Brass Contributoronly other thing i can think to try other than make sure skype and edge is latest version, is to set up 2 step verification,, might refresh things and prevent bots from loging you in or out, here is how,
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/how-to-use-two-step-verification-with-your-microsoft-account-c7910146-672f-01e9-50a0-93b4585e7eb4- PtrkHrnkCopper ContributorIs there something like master switch button, that will log you out off all apps and all devices a makes you do 2FA again?
I'm willing to do that...

Im using Edge on a Linux Device and it doesnt happen there, on my win 10 device it happens now with every start of edge, bookmarks and so on get synced no problem when logged in

not shure why people still replying to this forum,, solution is in here many times, ,and no matter what OS you have it happens in any OS, as issue is with edge after some updates colided.,, so reset edge is the solution usually via control panel add/remove apps, right click edge and click change, then click repair and it will re download edge, if not create a new user account, if not last resort is reinstall your OS , via inlplace upgrade if want to keep files and settings .Wasemack

Resetting edge with every single start of edge is NOT a solution 🙂
Also, I wont create a new Microsoft account to loose everything on my account just bc the issue is an account issue on their end?
Especially now that they are making everything account exclusive. This is an issue still happening and needs to get fixed by Microsoft and noone else.
It only happens on my win 10 device no matter how often I reset/reinstall edge OR windows.
on my linux, never happens.

florismkleijne Is Microsoft ever going to fix it? Edge keeps logging me out on two laptops for months. My parents started reporting the very same problem a couple of weeks ago. What do we do? Switch to another browser? Is that it?
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorI have no insight in MS's plans/roadmap. All I can say is that so far, the in-place reinstall of Windows 11 was a permanent and painless fix for me.

florismkleijne have the same issue and applied the Hello fix will report back
- tomzaoCopper ContributorI guess we have to learn to live with it. I've had this problem for months on different computers and even reinstalling Windows didn't help.
- David_Morrison123Copper Contributorjust started happening to me july 2024. have to keep signing in to edge daily ,are you on 10 or 11, i have 2 computer , win 10 and 11, win 11 fine, prob only on 10,

David_Morrison123 I'm on Win11; in-place reinstall fixed the issue (and my apparently related-after-all Windows Security issue). Don't know a solution for Win10, don't think 10 supports a painless in-place reinstall.

In my case, none of the advice I found on the Internet helped. It took several months. Yesterday I did this:
1. I logged in to my Microsoft account and checked that synchronization is active.
2. I signed out of my Microsoft account.
3. I created a new profile and logged in with my email address.
4. The browser has downloaded the profile data and settings.
5. I deleted my old profile.Since then it didn't log me out automatically, everything is fine. An additional advantage is that the old profile was 3x larger than the new one. Good luck.
- imololCopper Contributorsmall update : so far none of the recommended workarounds/fixes worked on my end, the problem always came back. But after recent Edge update, I had 0 logouts in Edge, so it seems MS actually did addressed this. Hope its the same for the rest of you.
- imololCopper ContributorNever mind... it's back. Every time I think it's fixed, it comes back when I post here. However, it feels like the frequency of logouts is lower.

It's not an Edge related problem, It's a Microsoft account server problem.
I have the same exact issue and it happens randomly in:
-MS Edge
-Office desktop apps
-OneDrive
-Skype
-Teams
-Microsoft Defender
-Windows 10 Mail App
I have 4 different PCs and it happens on ALL of them. I also know 4 other persons that have the same exact issue.
The only thing in common is that it regards the Microsoft Account.
Take a look at this:
word and outlook keep asking me to sign in - Microsoft Community
It's a Microsoft problem and they refuse to acknowledge it
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorYes, it's an MS account issue, an a Microsoft problem, that is obvious. Given that Edge is a Microsoft product, that's kind of a distinction without a difference.
Have you tried removing all Windows Hello signin options? So far, that's the only resolution anyone has found that seems to work and keep working.- vlad_8011Copper Contributor
Hello not working long term, at least for me.
I have checked windows privacy settings, that apps have access to my account (YES). Then i checked settings at MICROSOFT ACCOUNT, there was some issue, i changed settings to proper, it fixed it. At least thats what i tought. Then trick with hello worked, but since 2 days its back again. I even reinstalled edge (you can now remove it).
BTW that setting in MS Account is in privacy > MS Account and Windows System.
