What is the impact on GDAP when moving from Direct to Indirect?

When a Direct partner becomes an Indirect Reseller and associates with a Distributor, will they have to reestablish GDAP rights with existing customers once the subscriptions are transferred to the reseller account?

  • Hello,

I am providing a link to the documentation on moving from a Direct Bill to an Indirect reseller.  This article will walk you through the entire process end to end: Switch direct-bill partner to indirect reseller - Partner Center | Microsoft Learn

There is a section under this broader article titled: Move your Direct-Bill customers to your Indirect Provider. This section of the article walks you through everything you need to do to move your customers, including GDAP relationship.

What happens to the GDAP relationship established when the partner was direct?  Does that stay in place or will the partner need to resubmit the invite to the customer.  My understanding is that if the partner keeps the same tenant for both direct and indirect, they will not have to send new invites.  However, if they establish their indirect partner account, they would need to reestablish GDAP rights with customers once they are transferred.

Generally when moving from T1 to T2, you need to enroll a different Partner Location ID (PLA) as CSP Indirect Reseller, as the current PLA you're using is already enrolled as CSP Direct and having both Direct and Indirect status on the same PLA is not best-practice from Microsoft.

So when enrolling a new PLA as CSP Indirect Reseller, you need to setup a new tenant and a new Partner Center for the T2 account. This means you'll need to re-establish new GDAP relationships from this new T2 Partner Center, as it's linked to a different tenant.
