Do I understand it correctly that this Customer Self-Serve capability will enable customers to purchase licenses in their M365 Admin Center thru a CSP partner, and that the subscription therefore will be activated in the Partner Center of the CSP partner?

MartijnElfers Thanks for the question. No this does not mean they will be able to purchase through MAC. It is just a guide to help you create a self serve portal for customers. What we have seen a lot of customers demanding (and also partners creating) recently is a portal on the partner's websites where customers can log in and simply add licenses with a simple click. As we see more of our major partners doing this, we highly recommend others to do the same. Some use it for existing customers only, others also for new customer acquisition.

Check out the deck (takes around 15min for a first screen) and you might find some value for your own process. In or outside self serve.

Okay, yes that makes more sense. I think this documentation only applies for CSP Direct Partners, as CSP Indirect Resellers are dependent on their CSP Disti.

As a CSP Distributor, we already have partner and customer facing portals, so end customers can already purchase licenses themselves thru their reseller in our Partner Center.
But for a moment I was afraid that customers would be able to purchase licenses thru MAC into the partners' CSP portal. That would've been a game changer

I don't believe it is clear what this is.
To me it just looks like a set of guidelines on how a good CSP store should operate.
Am I wrong, or Microsoft planning to publish self-service portal capabilities for partners to use?

I could not agree more that this is beneficial for any CSP. Many of those very good CSPs still value some support and guidance. - so here it is! 🙂
