Unable to connect to Remote Desktop

I have tried:

  • resubscribing
  • refreshing the feed
  • resetting user data
  • uninstalling and reinstalling

I work internally here and don't know who to contact as helpdesk told me to do the following listed above and uninstalling/reinstalling worked then but not now.

    Hello.

We are operating an AVD environment with multiple win 11 multi user based session hosts. Our users also experienced this with the same error.  We uninstalled the march cummulative update, after that the issue seems resolved. There is some kind of rdp issue. It is unclear the real root cause (least to me). Here are some hints in the topic: https://borncity.com/win/2025/03/17/windows-11-march-2025-updates-cause-issues-with-rdp-connections/

If you do not have admin access to the servers, ask your IT for help. I do not think it is an end user issue.

    Hi,

Check Permissions: If you have access to any internal admin tools or can reach someone in IT beyond the helpdesk, verify your account’s permissions for the resource. Look into whether your department’s access rights have been altered recently.
Clear Cached Credentials: Open Credential Manager (on Windows) and remove any stored Remote Desktop credentials. Then, retry the connection and input your login details fresh.

feel free to reach out if you more questions

Can you provide more information on your setup? If this session host is an Azure VM, are you able to view its details in Azure? You can often see issues there in the Virtual Desktop blade.

  • Take this:

    1. Check Domain Connection: If your setup involves Azure AD or a hybrid AD environment, ensure that the machine is properly joined to the correct domain. Sometimes, disconnecting and rejoining the domain can resolve the issue.

    2. Registry Fix: Some users have reported success by modifying the registry. Specifically, adding or updating the key:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\rdp-sxs]
    "fReverseConnectMode"=dword:00000001

    3. Session Host Issues: If this is part of a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), ensure that the session host is online and properly configured. Removing and re-adding the session host to the pool has worked for some.

    4. Reconfigure Virtual Desktop: If you're using a custom image for your virtual desktop, ensure it's compatible. Recreating the image with a different base version has resolved similar issues for others.
