Today, we celebrate SharePoint’s 25th birthday and kick off a 2-week global SharePoint hackathon, an open invitation for our entire community to build, experiment, and help shape what’s next. A huge thank you for being part of the best community in tech!

We are grateful for the trust customers have placed in SharePoint to store their most important knowledge – and our customers’ use cases have always inspired our product enhancements.  Over the past year, we’ve completed UX improvements that enabled you to create more compelling and engaging intranet content and released major innovations that enabled Copilot to deeply understand the content in SharePoint.  Today, we are announcing three more steps forward for SharePoint:

  • AI in SharePoint: We’re transforming how teams build solutions, publish content, and organize information using AI. With AI in SharePoint, you start with intent, describe it in natural language, and move directly to working solutions that reflect how your business actually operates. This is a multi‑turn, collaborative experience that spans site, page, list, and library creation, configuration, and consumption.
  • The new SharePoint experience:  We are giving SharePoint a visual refresh and improving how users navigate the product, oriented around our customers’ top 3 content scenarios: discovering what’s new in SharePoint, publishing content, and building solutions. These new front doors in our product will be an important foundation for new experiences and innovations as we build out the product’s next chapter.
  • Enhanced content governance: Secure-by-design governance in SharePoint is critical to every Copilot & agent deployment.  We are announcing new governance and billing updates across Microsoft 365 Copilot, SharePoint Admin Center, and Microsoft 365 Backup.

These experiences are starting to roll out today through tenant level public preview, with additional capabilities rolling out over the coming weeks. Let’s dive right into the details.

AI in SharePoint: From intent to real solutions

SharePoint has always been a powerful platform for building solutions, but turning ideas into reality has traditionally required technical configuration and deep expertise.

The newest wave of AI in SharePoint changes that. Whether you’re a SharePoint novice now able to get started faster or a SharePoint expert looking to save time, you can now start with intent, described in natural language, and move directly to real, working solutions that reflect how your business actually operates.

Starting to roll out today and finishing over the next few weeks, AI in SharePoint lets teams plan, build, and evolve SharePoint solutions using natural language.

Build stunning additions to pages with natural language input

SharePoint now acts as an active partner, asking clarifying questions and proposing plans to help ensure the solution aligns with your intent before anything is created. By describing what you want to build, SharePoint responds with a structured plan that spans site structure, pages, libraries, lists, and starter content.

SharePoint builds a plan from your description and iterates with you like a teammate

Behind the scenes, AI in SharePoint orchestrates dozens of tools through an iterative reasoning-driven process. Just a single prompt triggers a sequence of planning, evaluation, and adjustment.

Coming soon, organizations will be able to define their own custom skills and apply it to SharePoint’s AI. These skills act as active guardrails through execution, not after the fact. They define your organization’s standards for site structure, libraries, metadata, and document creation, ensuring everything built is fast, accurate, and repeatable by design.

As solutions take shape, SharePoint continues working in the background by structuring information and enriching it with metadata. This prepares content to power more accurate, grounded Copilot and agent experiences across Microsoft 365, while keeping solutions aligned with organizational standards.

Last fall, we introduced the public preview of Knowledge Agent as a major step forward - bringing AI-powered content cleanup, metadata enrichment and library organization, page updates, and scoped Q&A grounded in SharePoint content.

Today, we’ve integrated all of the Knowledge Agent capabilities natively to the platform. What began as Knowledge Agent is now simply AI in SharePoint. While the name has changed, the core experience remains within your M365 Copilot license: high value, agentic AI that’s always available in context through the floating action button.

The floating action button: Context-aware suggestions based on your content, role, and behavior in SharePoint

What was the Knowledge Agent public preview is now the AI in SharePoint public preview. If you are one of the 5000+ tenants that have already opted in, we’re excited for you to try out this new functionality. If you haven’t opted in yet, you can do so here.

Based on evals, testing, and capacity, our initial rollout of the advanced AI capabilities in SharePoint relies on Anthropic's Claude. This is important to note as, based on your location, you may need to opt-in to allow Anthropic as a sub processor for Microsoft Online Services in order for the new preview functionality to work. We recognize this may not be an option for all our customers, and we will address before General Availability of AI in SharePoint.

Check out what’s new

We’ve designed AI in SharePoint to work across the entire spectrum of SharePoint content – both new sites and on existing sites, libraries, lists, and pages.   Let’s look at exactly what’s new for each content type in SharePoint:

Sites: Describe the solution you need, and SharePoint creates a structured plan - sites, pages, lists, and libraries included. Iterate with AI like you would with a teammate and refine as needed.

Available via the AI in SharePoint public preview at the end of March.

Describe what you want to build, and SharePoint does the heavy lifting

Pages: Draft, refine, and reorganize content directly on the canvas. Ask SharePoint to adjust tone, generate summaries, or reshape sections.  The latest AI models are a huge leap forward for web content generation and SharePoint has embraced them for on-brand, gorgeous page creation.

Now available in the AI in SharePoint public preview.

SharePoint helps you build and evolve page content, including infographics, right on the canvas using natural language.

Libraries: Organize intelligent libraries by describing how you want information managed. SharePoint uses AI‑powered skills to automatically extract and apply metadata, add or refine columns, and organize files as content changes - no manual tagging required. That AI‑generated metadata then powers SharePoint’s native workflows, automating everyday tasks directly within libraries, without leaving the context of your work.

Now available in the AI in SharePoint public preview.

Create a library that extracts the metadata you need

Lists: Fully create, read, update, and manage list data through natural language - populate lists from files, evolve schemas over time, edit and refine items, format views, create forms, and ask questions grounded directly in your list data.

Now rolling out to the AI in SharePoint public preview.

Ask SharePoint to build new lists, edit existing ones, or ask questions about the contents

Structured Documents AI detects fields automatically from a Word document, which can then be used as a template. From then on, users can simply fill out a form, and SharePoint will convert the responses into a structured document, ensuring every generated document is consistent, compliant, and aligned with your organization’s standards.

The new SharePoint experience: Built for how work happens

With over 2 million SharePoint sites created every day, the way people experience and manage content in SharePoint matters more than ever. We believe the experience should be simple and intuitive, designed around the core user jobs of:

  • Discovering what’s new for you and finding relevant content
  • Publishing once and sharing across Microsoft 365
  • Building and managing enterprise solutions

Today, we’re announcing a visual update for SharePoint aligned to this framework.  This new experience is now available in public preview via tenant -level opt-in.   Once a tenant is opted-in, individual users have the option to switch between the new and existing experience via a “New SharePoint” toggle – easing change management during this preview period. We are seeing a 99% keep rate from our private preview users. Launch the demo here.

At the center of the update is a new app bar - making it faster and more intuitive to move between key destinations across SharePoint.

Starting at the top, we know how important it is for employees to have an easy-to-discover and navigable experience to their organization’s content. Which is why we have introduced the option for organizations to surface their organizations home site directly at the top of the app bar, allowing users to get to their home site from anywhere in SharePoint with just a single click.

Next, we have Discover, Publish, and Build, mapping to each of the core user jobs. In addition to the destinations themselves, each node in the app bar supports a hover-on flyout that allows users to quickly get to where they want to within SharePoint.

And finally, to make it easier than ever to get back to the files you care about, the new app bar also includes a dedicated link to OneDrive.

Now let’s walk through the details.

Your organization hub for news, resources and more

The top, customizable node in the new SharePoint app bar is your organization Home site - fully configurable and programmable by your organization, bringing together news, events, resources, and content in a single consistent branded destination across web, Teams desktop, and Teams mobile. As part of this update, the best of Viva Connections is consolidated into the SharePoint Home site, giving you the ability to deliver a single branded and connected employee experience that your organization controls end-to-end across all endpoints.

The Viva Connections app in Microsoft Teams is evolving into the SharePoint app, making it easier than ever to navigate across your intranet whether on the web, Teams desktop or mobile. For customers currently using Viva Connections with a customized name and icon, there is no change. For customers who have not customized the name and icon, the app will appear as the SharePoint app in Teams. In addition, customers can configure the default boot experience for the SharePoint app – choosing the Home Site if they wish or the Teams optimized, out-of-the-box templates Connections customers are familiar with today. And lastly, we are making the configuration experience for this easier than ever by consolidating within the SharePoint Admin Center.

These SharePoint Home site and Viva Connections updates will begin rolling out in April .

The new home site in SharePoint – bringing company news, events, resources, and content together

Discover: SharePoint’s new front door

Discover replaces SharePoint Start with a modern front door that helps you quickly get back to the sites and content that matter most. It brings together your recent and favorite sites, relevant news, collaborator updates, and file activity - all personalized to you. With built-in AI actions, you can jump straight into conversations to ask questions, catch up, and stay current on the sites you care about.

A cleaner, more intuitive layout designed to simplify wayfinding and raise engagement

The new Discover, available now in public preview:

  • Personalized and AI‑driven: Surface the most relevant sites, files, and updates based on your activity and network - so what matters finds you. Search remains easily available for deeper targeted discovery.
  • Stay current at a glance: Refreshed site cards, coworker updates, and recent items bring the latest changes and collaborations into a single, streamlined view.
  • Faster navigation across work: A collapsible left nav lets you move easily between sites, news, people, and saved content - making it simple to explore work from any angle.

Publish: Create once, manage centrally, reach everywhere

For the first time in SharePoint’s history, Publish brings the entire communications workflow into one central workspace. It’s the primary hub to create, manage, and track the performance of your content.

By unifying the best of core SharePoint and premium Viva Amplify publishing capabilities into a single destination, communicators and site authors now have a home from which they can create and deliver content across all Microsoft 365 scale channels: SharePoint, email, Viva Engage, and Teams.   There are no changes to the Viva Amplify licensing model.

Create and publish with ease

The new Publish, available now in public preview:

  • Pick up where you left off: Jump back into drafts instantly and start faster with smart, ready‑to‑use templates.
  • Manage publishing in one place: Track pages, news, campaigns, and performance together with a single, organized workspace and built‑in analytics.
  • Move fast with fewer clicks: Quick actions and streamlined navigation keep creation, publishing, and measurement always within reach.

Full integration of Viva Amplify into the new Publish experience will be coming later this year.

Build: Enterprise solution building with ease

Build is our home for makers. It’s the central launchpad for creating and managing solutions in SharePoint. For the first time ever, Build allows makers to work with Sites, Lists, Libraries and Agents from a single, intuitive surface.

For those licensed for AI in SharePoint, the Build experience is where you can use natural language to describe your needs and iterate with the new solution planner.   If not, the Build experience offers rich templates to get started and a quick way to get back to what you have built.

Describe what you want to build, and SharePoint does the heavy lifting

The new Build, available now in public preview:

  • Start fast, build with intent: Creation wizards and natural‑language input help creators quickly plan and build Sites, Lists, Libraries, and Agents.
  • AI‑first, end‑to‑end building: An AI‑first experience guides creators from idea to execution, helping assemble flexible, multi‑part solutions across SharePoint building blocks.
  • Learn and improve as you go: Built‑in guidance, best practices, and learning resources help creators move faster and stay confident as solutions evolve.

Enhanced content governance: Built-in trust that unlocks AI at scale

Everything we’re announcing today is designed to help organizations confidently adopt AI and agents at scale, but that only works when trust is built in from the start. SharePoint grounds innovation in strong security and governance by protecting content, respecting permissions, and handling data responsibly so AI can operate within the right boundaries.

The new SharePoint Admin Agent, announced at Microsoft Ignite 2025 and fully available to admins with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, brings proactive, AI driven governance into the SharePoint admin center. We’re adding new agentic skills to this agent across a number of critical governance vectors:

  • Site permissions skills: Use natural language to analyze tenant-wide permissions, quickly flag oversharing risks, explain root causes, and provide clear remediation.
  • Site lifecycle management skills: Surfaces inactive, ownerless, high-risk sites with clear cleanup and insights, advanced filtering, and exportable reporting.
  • Storage management skills: Copilot-powered insights into tenant and site storage trends flag risks, surfacing cleanup actions guiding governance and PAYGO onboarding with fast recovery support.
The SharePoint Admin Agent brings AI facilitate governance to SharePoint admin center

In addition to these new SharePoint Admin Agent capabilities, we are adding departmental billing for Microsoft 365 Backup – now generally available. This allows organizations to allocate backup costs by department, team, or geographic unit by linking backup policies to separate pay-as-you-go billing policies and Azure subscriptions.  For more information on Microsoft 365 Backup, watch this new video that details how Microsoft backup solutions can help you quickly restore business-critical data at scale and protect your AI investments.

Twenty-five years, built together

SharePoint exists today because of our customers and partners. For 25 years, their trust, feedback, and partnership have shaped how the platform helps teams bring clarity to content and move faster from idea to execution. We’re proud to build alongside them, and grateful for the stories they continue to share.

From milestone to motion: Join us at the SharePoint Hackathon

This milestone is just the beginning. As I mentioned at the top, the SharePoint Hackathon kicks off today, and we are inviting everyone looking to build and improve work. From end users and designers to makers, IT pros, and developers, the Hackathon is a hands-on entry point into SharePoint’s AI first future.

The journey continues beyond March 2. We’re hosting six more live streams, created and delivered by feature crews who’ve invested weeks of work to bring these experiences to life. These sessions are a core part of the launch and is designed to go deeper, share real guidance, and help you put AI‑powered SharePoint into action.

We encourage you to watch the live streams, participate in the hackathon, and submit your stories - winning teams for each category earn a Surface laptop.
