Future-proof your skills: Microsoft’s new cloud, AI, and security Certifications.

AI isn’t just changing jobs descriptions, it’s redefining how work gets done across every industry, role, and skill level. From marketing to manufacturing, AI is reshaping workflows, speeding up decisions, and opening entirely new career paths. And the impact is massive. According to the World Economic Forum The Future of Jobs Report 2025, advances in AI and tech could create 78 million new jobs by 2030.

“We’re in the middle of a once‑in‑a‑generation shift in how work gets done,” says Elisa Graceffo, General Manager of Global Skilling at Microsoft. “For over 30 years, Microsoft Certifications have set the benchmark for skills validation. We’re evolving them as fast as roles are changing so you can prove your skills for the future of work.”

To keep pace with this shift, we’re launching a new wave of Certifications designed for AI‑powered roles, from entry level to advanced, from developers and data pros to business professionals. These new Certifications reflect the major industry drivers shaping today’s workplace, including the rise of generative AI and autonomous agents and the emergence of integrated cloud and AI systems. They also highlight how business professionals are evolving into orchestrators of AI‑powered workflows and innovation. And because AI is ultimately a force that amplifies human capability, these Certifications can help ensure that your skills stay relevant, practical, and aligned with the real‑world work of 2026 and beyond.

Navigating the transition: FAQs

The following questions and answers can help you determine how these retirements and expanded portfolio could impact your learning journey:

Q. I’ve already earned one of the retiring Certifications. What happens now?

A. If you’ve already earned any of the retiring Certifications, your credential remains valid and, on your transcript, until it expires. Retirement does not revoke or invalidate Certifications that were earned.

Q. Can I still renew a soon-to-retire Certification?
A. Yes, as long as it’s eligible for renewal and you renew it before the Certification officially retires. Fundamentals Certifications don’t expire.

Q. I’m preparing for an exam that’s retiring. What should I do?

If you’re actively preparing for an exam that’s retiring:

  • If you’ve already registered for the exam, you may continue preparing for it and take it while it’s still available. Keep in mind that after the exam retires, you won’t be able to retake it if you don’t pass, and you won’t be able to renew it.
  • If you haven’t registered for the exam, we strongly recommend that you prepare for and take the new exam instead, as noted in the following table.

Windows Hybrid Certification has nothing to do with AI, I don't understand this great need for change.

Hello, the update to the Windows Hybrid Certification exam is designed to support you in staying current with evolving skills, while simplifying the journey with a single exam. If you’ve already earned the certification by completing Exam 800 or 801, there’s no need to take the new Exam 802. Simply renew your certification through the new 802 renewal assessment, just as you would have with the previous version.

I'm not sure if MSFT even want non-AI on Azure anymore. Probably time to do certificates for other clouds with less AI hype.

***we have to wait, I have opened a TT with Microsoft about it***

  • AZ-204 to AI-200 - why????? What a terrible decision. Is Microsoft so desperate that we have to lose the one certification that allowed devs to understand Azure architecture???

Devs don't care about all that AI non-sense, there is no real reason why someone wanting to show their skills on things like databases and message queues would have to endure reading about AI.

Absolutely, 100% terrible decision. I'm done with Microsoft certifications.

Hello, AI-200 focuses on the skills developers need to deliver solutions on Azure with demanding performance and responsiveness requirements. The course covers similar ground as AZ-204, but with a greater focus on code and observability. The certification will let developers show they can deliver solutions on Azure with a variety of architectural requirements.

I understand your frustration and I'm in total agreement - wtf are they thinking here.

It's like the Az-800/801 going into one certification the az-802 - so, if they don't allow us to renew and FORCE us to take the 802 exam, then we would have paid a total of £360 in exam fee's in just over a year (depending on how quickly you earned both exams) AND we would only have the original certification for one year. Say if we cannot take the az-802, then we lose the certification.

      !!!

Hello, the update to the Windows Hybrid Certification exam is designed to support you in staying current with evolving skills, while simplifying the journey with a single, streamlined exam. If you’ve already earned the certification by completing Exam 800 or 801, there’s no need to take the new Exam 802. Simply renew your certification through the new 802 renewal assessment before the expiration date of the previous one, just as you would have with the previous version.

  • I appreciate the update and I get why you’re moving certifications toward more AI-powered roles. But I’m a bit confused about how this transition is playing out in practice.

For example: why are the current Certification Weeks still focused on AI-102 and AZ-204, while this post says that if you’re not close to testing you should prepare for AI-103 and AI-200 instead? It feels like the messaging and the actual training/events aren’t fully aligned yet.

Also, can you confirm I’m understanding this correctly: if I already have AI-102, I don’t automatically get AI-103 (same idea for AZ-204 → AI-200)? If that’s the case, are you considering some kind of upgrade path (discounts for people who recently passed, etc.)?

And on the Fundamentals point: you say Fundamentals certifications don’t expire, what’s the practical benefit when a new Fundamentals exam replaces the old one (like AI-900 being replaced by AI-901)? Is it mainly just that it stays on your transcript forever, or are there other advantages?

Also, the retirements listed here (even though its already a lot) seem limited, as I’ve seen broader lists circulating online that mention other certs (like PL-200 and PL-600 and a lot of Dynamics365 certifications). Is this the complete list of soon-to-retire cert's, or are there additional retirements planned that aren’t included in this post? If there’s a single source of truth for upcoming retirements, it would really help to point people to it.

Lastly (and this is the big one): certifications cost money, but they cost even more in time. People plan their learning across providers (Microsoft/AWS/Google/etc.) and within Microsoft based on how long certs will be relevant and (for me personally at least) how renewal system works. In my case, four certifications I earned in the last six months are now on the retirement list. I understand the “why” behind the AI shift, but as someone paying for exams myself and spending a lot of free time studying, it honestly feels a bit like wasted effort.

I’m curious how you’ve thought about the candidate experience here, and what you’re doing to make these transitions smoother and less demotivating for people who just earned the retiring certs.

      Hello,

Thanks for your interest in Microsoft Certifications. The new exams do not cover the same content of the existing exams. One of the purposes of creating new courses with new course numbers, and new exams, is to introduce a significant amount of new material that would not make sense in a simple update of the existing material. Thus, for example, AI-102 and AI-103 are not equivalent similarly AI 900 and AI 901. The essential value of holding a Microsoft certification is to indicate that the credential holder is skilled on the technology of today. The rapid advancement of AI capabilities makes it essential that new certifications are created to help learners showcase their readiness in current and future. As far as Sales week, it is aligned with the certs that are available and still active in the market. Our goal though with this information is to help you all be informed so you can plan short-term to medium to long term goals.

  • It's not clear if the Windows Server Hybrid Administrator certification is being retired and a new certification released with the same name. It appears that the Windows Server Hybrid Administrator certification name is not changing whereas all the others on that table have new certification names.

If the certification is not changing and just the qualifying exams are being changed and if you have earned the certification by passing AZ-800 and AZ-801, will you need to take the AZ-802 exam or will you just be able to renew the certification when your certification is due?

    • SpenceK's avatar

This is my question.  I got the Hybrid Certification a few days ago, then to see this information is a bit annoying.  I spent an awful lot of time, and money, studying these TWO exams, and they get migrated over into one exam!  Furthermore, as you correctly stated, does this mean in a year's time, the Hybrid Certification - in az-800 & az-801 form becomes invalid, meaning there is no option to renew, I have to retake the az-802.

I'm hoping either there is an update path, or indeed like others have said, a similar situation as the MD-100, MD-101 and we automatically get the 802.

I mean, what a kick in the teeth if we have to do the full exam all over again!!

I think this will be similar to MD-100 & MD-101 changed to MD-102, u will be automatically get 802 perhaps that's my thoughts. Because my thas what happened with me when changes for Endpoint was rollout.

But in that case, the endpoint certification was not retired. In the post, the certification is marked for retirement. However, I hope that you are correct.

Note: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator is the last of the associate level certifications that require 2 exams - all the rest migrated to a single exam a ling time ago.

I plan to take the AZ-801 exam to complete the Hybrid certification by June. Once I obtain the certificate, will I have to take a new exam for the AZ-802 or is it enough to renew it by the deadline? THX

      Hello,

Thank you for your feedback and for investing your time in Microsoft Certifications. As mentioned in the blog above, the retirement of a certification does not invalidate it. Our goal is to ensure that learners continue to have opportunities to stay current with the evolving technology landscape. The new certifications introduced in place of the retiring ones are designed to reflect the latest industry skills and trends, offering a valuable path forward to keep up with the latest skills.

Rest assured, the time and effort you’ve invested and the certifications you’ve already earned remain valid till they expire. They help contribute towards for professional skills development and will continue to hold value as you build on your skills.

So MS have deleted my earlier comment.

This whole situation is disgusting, then because you don't like what I've put you delete my valid, honest comment.

You are basically screwing us over here, making us pay 3 times for the Hybrid Administrator Certification, and wasting out time by not allowing us to renew. We paid out £270+ for a certificate that we can only keep for a year, it took me longer than a **** year to study for it!!

Then you go and delete my comment.

This is disgusting and equally disappointing, I will never look at Microsoft again. We are beinf treated like utter garbage.
