SharePoint Embedded & M-Files: powering a new wave of industry agents for document management
Today, July 1, 2025 marks a new era in the document management industry, and a new chapter for SharePoint as the world's leading document management platform. Today we share the news that M-Files has announced that they are using SharePoint Embedded to natively store their customers' content in Microsoft 365. By natively leveraging SharePoint Embedded, M-Files is enhancing its deep portfolio of solutions with the full richness of Microsoft 365, Purview, and Copilot. We are thrilled to deepen the long-standing partnership between M-Files and Microsoft for the benefit of our mutual customers beyond the existing integrations into Office, Teams, Dynamics, and more that M-Files provides. M-Files has always been known for excelling in high value solutions for accounting, tax & audit, wealth management, consulting, engineering, energy & utilities, scientific research, insurance brokers and manufacturing. With deep integration into line of business systems commonly used in these sectors, and extensive metadata, business objects, and advanced document management capabilities, they have built formidable expertise in these verticals. However, until today, when choosing another document management platform from a competitor, customers had to make the difficult choice to lose the benefits of Microsoft 365 as the content would be stored in a separate repository. Losing features such as fully native co-authoring, the best security and compliance in the industry with Microsoft Purview, and direct support with Copilot and the rest of the features of Microsoft 365 in order to get the deepest industry solutions and line of business system integration, was a painful choice. Starting today, customers no longer have to choose. M-Files now leverages SharePoint Embedded as the storage layer for their platform. This means M-Files customers' content lives within the security boundary of Microsoft 365 with full Purview support. Everyone gets completely native co-authoring and sharing exactly like they do in OneDrive or SharePoint thanks to SharePoint Embedded. Microsoft Search can find and index the content without any connectors. Most importantly, Copilot can reason over the content in M-Files and a whole new generation of agents can be delivered with curated, AI-ready content that customers have long stored in M-Files. These agents are tailored assistants scoped to specific SharePoint sites and content, becoming your subject matter experts working on behalf of a person, team, or organization to handle simple tasks or more complex business processes. Every SharePoint site now includes an agent grounded to that site’s data ready for immediate use. With just a few clicks users can easily create their own custom agents with specialized skills scoped to their specific SharePoint files and folders. And of course, agents adhere to existing SharePoint content permissions and governance polices, ensuring your data and content are used in a safe and secure manner. We see our customers using agents today for a range of scenarios such as onboarding, product support, planning and more. Design Ideas leverages your content and provides several professionally designed suggestions, automatically taking your content-specific requirements into account. You can easily invoke Design Ideas with just the click of a single button and in seconds, transform your sections into user-ready content. AI and automation for streamlining your work Billions of pieces of content are added to SharePoint each day relevant to both, small team collaborations, and broad company-wide initiatives. From out of the box simple approvals and automation, to site, doclib, and list templates and all the way to Power Platform integration – Automation in SharePoint spans the continuum of business processes to get work done faster and at higher quality. As just one example, over 3 billion Power Automate flows run against SharePoint every week. In this next phase of innovation, we are excited to share more about how automation and AI integrate together. Enhance business processes with AI Autofill is one feature that enriches content by extracting and generating structured metadata at scale – increasing the value of your content real estate. Using a natural language prompt you can describe the metadata you need, easily classifying, extracting, or generating new content as metadata. This will automate the process of new and modified files, saving you time and enhancing your business processes. Learn more about the pay-as-you-go pricing model as it relates to SharePoint agents in Microsoft 365. Last month, we introduced consumption-based pricing for SharePoint agents. This new billing model offers greater flexibility for organizations looking to start using SharePoint agents. The pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) meter enables customers to pay only for the messages they consume, providing an alternative to a per user/per month license. This model is designed to accommodate varying usage patterns, making it ideal for businesses with fluctuating demands.SharePoint Hackathon Winner - SharePoint Agents
We are excited to provide more details on the winners of the recent worldwide SharePoint Hackathon 2025. We had four different categories on this hackathon, which was available for everyone to join with different objectives for different roles from end user, designer, architect, or developer and more. We announced the nominees and winners for each of the categories in a separate blog post, but also wanted to provide more details on the winner submissions for each category. Winners in the SharePoint Agents category were Sudipta Kumar Basu, Kuntal Chakraborty, Pritam Mallick, and Snehasish Das from Capgemini. This category focused on demonstration of SharePoint agent use case on the distinct kinds of materials and source files which are used for the agents. Their submission was a great example on creating powerful agents with customer specific materials. You can find detailed demonstrations on their submission within the following video.
