After updating to Windows 11, some app icons have turned into blank white squares

After installing a system update, some app icons in the taskbar or Start menu turned into white squares and are not displaying properly. I’ve tried rebuilding the icon cache, clearing the thumbnail cache, and other methods; some icons have been restored, but a few app icons are still displaying incorrectly.

  • Hi Kodyon, if clearing the icon and thumbnail cache did not fix it, I would check whether the affected icons belong to Microsoft Store apps, pinned taskbar shortcuts, or normal desktop programs. For Store apps, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, choose the affected app, then try Repair or Reset. For normal desktop apps, right-click the shortcut, open Properties, and check whether the target path still points to the correct program. Sometimes after an update the shortcut remains but the icon path breaks. If only pinned icons are affected, unpin them, launch the app from Start, then pin it again
