My Laptop screen went blue and says Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart

Copper Contributor

It says We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you.  It then says 0% complete.  It has been like this for about an hour.  I can't restart it.

Can anyone help please?

@KathyZab  Hi,

Resolving Blue Screen errors in Windows - Microsoft Support

First try to force stop the system , hold down the power button for 10 seconds , take your time, then you can repeat it to start Windows.

@A1-A1 Thank you, that worked.  I had tried to restart it but that wasn't working.  This did though 🙂

The laptop seems fine except that it's having trouble working out what a .docx file is.  Is it likely to do this again?  I just got a new laptop and have removed everything from the old one, which is the one with the blue screen error.  Would a factory reset prevent this recurring?

@KathyZab

A new laptop requires a lot of updates - which it needs to download and install - it should be plugged in - and rebooted to install new drivers.

It's just that your way of using - (too short working time) causes the problem - but I'm just guessing 🙂

It's not the new laptop that had the blue screen, it's the old one that I'm busy transferring everything from. Most of my files are on the cloud so that's a big help 🙂
