SharePoint News Connector in Microsoft Teams and Hub Sites
Bit of an edge case this but I notice that the SharePoint News Connector does not pick up rolled up news from a Hub Site. I can see why this is by design but it would be useful to be able to configure the connector to respect the Hub Site status if I choose it.

Well considering the "Hub" site can't be a group site it makes sense. But also when you step back and think about it, you can't really do this from a permission standpoint.
If you setup a connector for news, is it going to roll up news that you have permission to and post it to the channel even if someone in the Team doesn't have access to that sub hub site's news? There is kind of a security barrier their and could be problematic because of that.
I want that capability too but some thinking around how that security works needs done. IMO a quick win would be allow news connector to post news from any site with the "Everyone" permission groups. Since most people use these permission groups for hub site scenarios I think this would be a valid use case for that connector without having to worry about that security boundary so much.
Curious what Mark-Kashman your thoughts might be on this. Have you guys thought about opening up the ShareNews connector a bit more for Teams, because right now just pulling in your current Team news is kind of worthless to be honest cause most Teams are small and not really utilizing this feature. But if we could connect it to a hub, and it pull "everyone" permission set news into Teams so we can pull in Org news to Teams that would be fantastic.
- Mark-KashmanFormer EmployeeGood feedback, and will channel it to the team that is working on "company news" and our GPM who manages the work schedule with the MS Teams team. One feature coming that we shared was the ability to add a page or news as a tab in Teams - and in this case, you can bring in any news article, not just one from the connected team site; so long as Team members have permissions to view the page/news that was added a tab in their Teams channel.

Yeah, still patiently waiting for the SharePoint tab, that will be a nice addition, but having the "Notification" aspect of News would be really nice. We could always create a Flow to handle it too, but giving the users that ability through a connector is a better experience for them, than us having to apply a flow to each Team etc. Letting them select sites that everyone on the Team can see via Everyone permission or something, but then again, nothing keeping users from doing the same thing with a flow bypassing security on news :) lol.
Maybe just make the connector pull from other site with a big disclaimer, hey news on these sites may be private to others on your Team :P. Then you could just open it up to all, and select the hub or sites you want news to come from. I guess another option could be a site setting to "publish" news to org regardless of the actual site/group permission. Then pickup the news from that setting.
Now, off topic, if we could apply a flow to all Teams somehow, now we are talking :). But the deployment model on that is kind of messy currently since to my knowledge we couldn't have a system user apply flow across Teams like that.
- John WynneSilver ContributorI do have a hub site as a group but take on your points. Interested to hear Microsoft thinking on this one. Thanks for taking the time to reply Christopher. Interesting times!
- DeletedHmm, I thought the actual parent hub level site couldn't be a group site?
