Accidentally deleted the default members container from the members group

Copper Contributor

I am not sure I am using the right terminology. But when you go Site Permissions, you'll see Site Members. And when you expand the latter, you'll see <sitename> Members. This is what I deleted accidentally, and couldn't find out how to bring it back.

So, to avoid service disruption, I added the uses individually to the Site Members.

I am putting below 2 screenshot from this SP site, and below them 2 screenshots from another site that's OK.

Can someone help me retrieve the deleted container?

Hi @Seaoar,

I have reviewed your question and the screenshots, and to try to resolve this you can try the following steps:

  1. Go to the SharePoint site where you want to restore the container.
  2. Click Site Settings in the top right corner of the page.
  3. Under Site Actions, click Site Permissions.
  4. On the Site Permissions page, click Add Permissions.
  5. In the Add Permissions dialog box, select Copy permissions from an existing group, and then select the Site Members group from the drop-down list.
  6. Click OK.

This will copy the permissions from the Site Members group on the other SharePoint site to the Site Members group on the current site. This will also restore the default members container to the Site Members group on the current site.

Hi@LeonPavesic

I'm afraid I'm not seeing these options. When I click on the gear icon, it opens a menu titles Settings that includes a list of links headed by the word 'SharePoint' in bold. The 5th link in the list is Site Permissions. And here is a screenshot of this:

Then when I click on Site Permissions, I get Add Members, not Add Permissions, like in my 1st screenshot in my post above.

Can you post screenshots of where you go what you see?

I am concluding that there is no solution for this problem.

  1. Are you using SharePoint team site?
  2. Did you delete the M365 members group associated with SharePoint members group and now trying to add it back?

If yes, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your SharePoint site
  2. Click on Settings (gear) icon --> Site permissions --> Advanced permissions settings. You can directly go to advanced permissions settings page using URL like this as well: <siteUrl>/_layouts/15/user.aspx
  3. Click on SharePoint site members group name to enter into it: ganeshsanap_1-1698401626708.png
  4. Click NewAdd Usersganeshsanap_2-1698401743140.png
  5. Search for your M365 members group and click Share button

Hi @ganeshsanap,

This is exactly what I can't do.

When I click on Add Users, I can add users individually, but not that group. See this:

And by the way, the texts that I covered with black are the same. I copy-pasted it from the People and Groups page. So there is no spelling mistake or anything like that.

@Seaoar

I am able to add M365 members group without any issues.

If you have admin access on tenant, you can check exact group names/emails for M365 groups at: https://admin.microsoft.com/#/groups

If you do not have tenant admin access, you can search for your M365 group email in to section of new mail in outlook:

OR maybe from the details of Microsoft team associated with your M365 group.
