MacOS Monterey - Disable Files on Demand
- Jan 03, 2022That sounds strange. I would expect it to be one or the other as you say. On my own Mac running Monterey I cannot duplicate your issue. As you say, you can't disable FOD from the OneDrive client settings but you should be able to do this with a PList as per https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/deploy-and-configure-on-macos#filesondemandenabled
This problem completely killed me, literally killed me. Thanks to Microsoft and One Drive super uber developers and testers. I had a perfect life before this Files on Demand feature.
I even cannot see what's happening behind the scenes. Many files are downloading uploading etc. My available hard disk size is changing between 150GB to 70GB it is not stable.
Tomorrow I have to work and I don't know what to do. Probably I will download very important folders manually and I will delete this stupid version and wait for a proper fix.
This version created a very very bad problems. In the future, synching files will be a pain and I have to do it manually.

I can't have only on demand as sometimes I am with slow internet connection. Is the only option leaving One Drive and moving to Drop Box or iCloud? Is there any real option of disabling One Drive files on demand?
- Yann GourvennecJan 26, 2022Brass ContributorMaybe you should try TAIngalls's script up above? I agree that this is a killer bug, extremely annoying and a bloody waste of our time.
- TAIngallsJan 26, 2022Copper ContributorI just updated my MBP 2016 to 12.2 and the OneDrive client updated as well. I set one of my folders to make always available and it looked like it downloaded everything, but didn't set the flag (attribute) correctly to show that it was downloaded. I then ran my md5 script on the directory and it completed as if everything was already downloaded and the flag now shows that it is downloaded.

Hi there. I have two Mac's (a 2017 iMac and a 2018 MacBook Air) both running Monterey 12,2. The 'preferences' on the machines are different. On the Air my OneDrive still has the option to 'Turn Off Files on Demand@ and on the iMac this option has disappeared.. The Air is running ver 21.230.1206.0004 of OneDrive and the iMac is running ver 22.002.0206.0004 - so the iMac with the newer version is where I have all the problems reported in this thread. Does this mean that the problem is not with Monterey but with OneDrive?
BTW, I had a load of aliases (shortcuts) on the desktop of my iMac, which all disappeared too. Maybe just a coincidence?
I do agree however it's a real pain as I want to keep files permanently on my iMac but Microsoft seem to be saying no and having closed OneDrive it's been 'processing' thousands of files for hours!
- wswailFeb 06, 2022Copper ContributorThey keep on F#@king up a decent system. Files on Demand shouldn't be the default, and there certainly should be an option to toggle off of that in preferences.
- Bruno930Feb 06, 2022Copper ContributorI just gave up, I need files on my laptop because sometimes I'm off the grid or in the air, I just can't trust MS, I just canceled onedrive and moved to iCloud.
