Teams Button on new Microsoft Modern Speaker and Modern Bluetooth Headset Stopped Working

Brass Contributor

I have the new Microsoft Modern Speaker and Modern Bluetooth headset for Teams. Recently the "Teams" button stopped working on both. If I understand how it's supposed to work when I press it while Teams isn't running it should start Teams, if Teams is running it should bring the application into focus (bring it into the foreground) and if it's running and a meeting starts it should flash and when pressed should join the meeting.

Pressing it now just causes it to blink and do nothing. Is anyone else having this issue? I am running Windows 10 and 11 (has the same issue whether it is on either OS version).

Still not working on Teams for Home in Windows 11.

Any update on the fix for this issue? The answer button is still not working on my device.

Very strange because on my device everything works perfectly (Teams business account).
It works since a few weeks back on Teams Business, just still doesn't work on Teams for Home (On Windows 11). Exact same issue we saw on the Business version starting back in December where the light flashes twice and does nothing. The fix on business was a backend fix by Microsoft as they had intentionally disabled it for some reason.
Still no luck with it working in Teams for Home (Friends and Family ie. Non-Commercial). Anyone else have it working?

Still not working for me - i am using Teams for Business @Icebugz

The problem also appears if you use Skype For Business + Teams. Closing Skype For Business brings back the function of the Teams button on the Microsoft Modern USB Headset wired in my case.

Yes, that is a known issue as well. My issue is now on a personal Surface Laptop 3 and neither Skype nor Skype for Business are installed. Microsoft has disabled the functionality on the backend of Teams for Family and Friends. They fixed Teams for Business back in January, but it is becoming more apparent that they don't care about the Consumer version

@Icebugz I have the issue where the Teams button and the Phone button do not work as well. So frustrating! I may as well take it back for a refund.

Microsoft Windows 11 Pro: 10.0.22000 Build 22000

Modern USB-C Speaker:

  Hardware version: 0.1

  Firmware version:

    Part 1: 1.9

    Part 2: 1.48

    Part 3: 1.23

MS Teams - just updated to latest available

  1.5.00.5967 (64-bit)

I just bought the Modern USB-C speaker and Teams button lights up white but does nothing no matter what.

I use Teams as my work phone and the call button will answer a voice call when pressed and it will hang it up. Mute works as well.

But I can hear mouse clicks and my chair moving on my cell phone side of the call coming from the speaker. The noise cancellation does not appear to be working. It is set to auto in Teams.

i need someone to teams video call me…. Tomorrow that will happen

Good luck with that. There's a better chance that the world is flat. Even as I reply to your message it keeps getting blocked with surveys for Microsoft. They could care less about your experience. They'll do nothing. Hate it because they were once an awesome company. Now they are trash.

@LindsayCx

Got the headset yesterday (17th May 2022) and I have the same issue with my Microsoft Modern Wireless Headset - Teams button and answer/end call button not working.

I'm using Microsoft Teams for business, version number 1.5.00.11163 (64-bit). It was last updated on 5/05/2022.

OS: Windows 10 Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.1706)

@ScottLou good luck my friend. It appears that Microsoft has completely abandoned this product functionality. I've been waiting on this to be fixed since December... Return it if you can.

I purchased a new USB-C Modern Speaker. The Teams button lit up when plugged into the USB port. However, the button had no effect when pressed. I rebooted the PC and saw the same outcome. I manually initiated a Teams update from within Teams. When the update completed, the Teams Button on the Modern Speaker started working as advertised (brought the Teams app into focus).

Are you referring to the commercial version of Teams (which you use with co-workers) or the "Friends and Family" version that comes bundled with Windows 11 and can be installed on Windows 10? They are different but look the same for the most part. Both were broken in December but the commercial version was fixed in late January early February. The "Friends and Family" version remains broken. Panos Panay has aggressively pushed using the "Friends and Family" version of Teams in his presentations. Microsoft even created a "Certified for Teams" accessory program that clearly does not apply to its own products. Don't get me wrong, I want them to succeed as I have worked in IT for 30 years going back to mainframe days. Now I work in the semiconductor industry. It appears to many in the industry that Microsoft is more a commercial focused company these days and I get why. I am writing this message on a Surface Duo 2 which is also not without a dozen aggravating small issues that could be fixed with a light lift. Sorry for the rant, I am a Microsoft fan, just want them to be a customer fan as well.

@Icebugz, sorry to have not been more specific. I was speaking about the Work or School version of Teams. I have not tested on the Friends & Family version although I do also use F&F and have been happy about some of the recent meeting scheduling UI enhancements.

No worries my friend thanks for clarifying, that definitely helps. Yes, I agree about the capabilities of the F&F client that have been added, hence my desire for the Teams button to work as expected. I think the eventual direction is to deprecate Skype and make Teams F&F the default messaging platform for consumers, but I don't think they have officially acknowledged that. If so, I think they should rebrand the name to something more consumer oriented, while still having the same backend.

If you get the time and can test the button capability on your F&F install we would greatly welcome the results. It doesn't change anything that would cause you to have to re-configure it on your work machine. Have a great day and thanks again!
@Icebugz, I brought home the speaker to test for you. I agree the Teams button does not work but all other functions performed as expected. I agree that the Teams button should function properly on the F&F Teams version and I hope that Microsoft is listening to us and will get it fixed soon. I agree there is more to do on F&F - it needs to be galactically simple to use for the F&F user base. And it needs to be able to interoperate seamlessly with users who are running the W&S version. I still have hope this will happen.
@dcpoirier thank you very much for taking the time to test it and share the results with the forum. I test it every week or so to see if Microsoft has fixed it but unfortunately they have not to date. It helps to hear from others to ensure it's not something in my configuration. Everything other than the button works on mine as well.

The fix for the button when using the Commercial version of Teams was a backend fix from Microsoft, it didn't need an app upgrade (although it could be fixed that way as well).

Thanks also for your insights, and I I couldn't agree more. It must be super easy and users shouldn't have to spend months on Microsofts forums trying to figure out whether they have a bad device or misconfiguration with no acknowledgement from them. We're talking about a single button that only has a couple functions. I've heard a couple rumors that there are some issues with the upcoming Loop components and Live Share but there has been nothing official. I guess time will tell.

Take care and stay safe my friend. I will post here when and if mine starts working.

I bought the Microsoft Modern Speaker today and the Teams button is still not working.

It lights up when it's plugged in.

Doesn't do anything if you press it once.

But pressing and holding it would "raise hand" in the Teams call.

What exactly is the expected behaviour for the Teams button?
