SharePoint & Teams Folder/Directory structure

I'm having issue with how SharePoint and Teams integrate... well, kinda don't.  Why can't SharePoint see the folders that are made in Teams?  It creates sites based on them, but why can't SharePoint be able to see the Directories/Folders inside a team?  When I map our company SharePoint drive I can't find the locations of the Teams Dir/Folders.  This means that there can be some possibility of duplication of files.

It would be nice to be able to create shortcuts to Teams Folder and put them in SharePoint so that I (as IT Admin) can direct my people to the correct Folders for files. OR at least be able to create shortcuts of files in Teams Dir/Folder structure and put them in the SharePoint structure. This way there is no duplicated files.

I'd think the easiest would be to allow the mapped SharePoint drive to see the folders/Dir. of the Teams, then allow for shortcuts to be placed in/on the SharePoint drive.

Or am I missing something?

I agree with you that use SharePoint Document to store file like a file share is a disaster! From the MS Team, you can NOT even to set the permisiosn for these "Channels" a sub folder. MS Team is designed to cover everything but you can find every issues in a small details! The SharePoint desig is nor for the folders structure at first place! It should use doecument metadata, filters instead. The will cause hugh performance late if you use the fodlers sctructure heavyly! Microsoft sucks!

jeffburkholder when you create new Channels in Teams, a new folder with the same name is created in the default document library of the associated SPO site. If you create folders in SPO, they do not currently show up automatically in Teams, but you can make them show up by manually creating a channel in Teams with the EXACT same name (this is going to be improved in the near future by providing all of the library functionality you see in SPO in the Teams UX)

    hi

Within sharepoint there is a facility to create a Library report in an excel sheet of all documents/files held including location folder. I think that this includes links. I found my teams files within a ' general ' folder in Sharepoint.

    Hope that helps .

By the way, in the SPO UI you are going to see soon when you are in document library and folder related to a channel in Microsoft Teams

So does that mean that in mapped SharePoint drive I'll see the Teams Library Folders? That's ultimately what needs to be done. This way shortcuts can be made in that Teams Dir. structure to locations in the SharePoint Dir. structure. This way a structure like this:

        SharePoint Drive:

        Shared Documents

             Folder 1

             Folder 2

             Folder 3  (etc....)

Yes, those can be accessed in Teams by using "+ Cloud Storage"

What would awesome is if it can act just like the Dir/File structure of Windows, your own OS. Why can't we make shortcuts in the SharePoint drive to locations in a file hierarchy that our is our company standard and both Teams and SharePoint can be directed to that. Do realize in my situation I'm dealing with a few people in the company that have no clue of file hierarchy and structure so I need to lead them to it. I'd love to have shortcuts to be put in Teams folders to the locations for specific folders on the SharePoint drive. Because us Tech types use the mapped drive in Windows to folder locations because it's part of the OS and is faster.

If I could create shortcuts of SharePoint drive locations into the Teams Files structure that would be a perfect world.

It sounds like your 'company SharePoint drive' is mapped to a specific site collection - most likely the 'tenant root' site collection - the url of which would be https://<tenantname>.sharepoint.com/

Each Team gets its own site collection - for example if you created a Team called Finance, the url would, by default, be https://<tenantname>.sharepoint.com/sites/Finance

Each channel in the Finance Team gets a folder in the document library in that site collection, so for example the General channel folder url is:

    https://<tenantname>.sharepoint.com/sites/Finance/Shared%20Documents/General

If you want to continue with the mapped drive idea, you would need to have different mapped drives for each Team - or perhaps configure it so that the T: drive maps to the Finance Team for finance users, and the T: drive maps to the HR Team for HR users, etc. Then keep the company SharePoint drive as a kind of 'common' drive.

Hmm.... that makes sense. But this is the default of what a mapped SharePoint drive looks like. This is a brand new SharePoint account, a week old.  I don't see a 'Sites' folder. Wish I did, that could be the solution to my madness.

Hi jeffburkholder. If you want to map a network drive to modern team sites, check out Zee Drive as it has http://www.thinkscape.com/Map-Network-Drives-To-Office-365-OneDrive/#TeamsFiles. You can view all your team site files from File Explorer.

        Myles

  • You actually can see the files! The files only exist in SharePoint , nowhere else! You need to understand how modern sharepoint works with office 365 group and the flat structure it creates! It seems you are syncing a single source of sharepoint files and have them on a intranet or something! That’s ok but not how you are suppose to work with teams!

I think you need to explain further your actual scenario here, so we can explain and help you out more

    Cheers / Adam
