Can multiple users use the same Authenticator app on one device

Copper Contributor

Hi,

My use case is as follows:

  • We have one shared mobile device and one shared laptop
  • Authenticator installed on the above mentioned shared device
  • Multiple users use the same mobile device and laptop (they work in shifts)
  • Each person has their own private 0365 account

Question: Can we configure Authenticator on the shared mobile device so, that there are multiple accounts but one can sign in only to one's own account by using the Authenticator, i.e. no access to sign in to other accounts by using the Authenticator.

Best,

Yes, multiple users can typically use the same Authenticator app on one device. Authenticator apps, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy, are designed to support multiple accounts from different services or platforms.

Each account within the Authenticator app is associated with a unique QR code or manual setup key when you set up two-factor authentication (2FA) for a specific service or platform. These codes or keys generate the time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs) that are used for authentication.

Here's how the process generally works:

1. Install the Authenticator app on the device.
2. For each account or service that you want to enable 2FA for, you'll typically go through the following steps:
- Log in to the service.
- Navigate to the 2FA settings.
- Choose the option to set up 2FA using an authenticator app.
- Scan the QR code displayed by the service using the Authenticator app, or enter the manual setup key provided by the service.
- The Authenticator app will then generate time-based codes that can be used for authentication.

You can repeat this process for multiple accounts within the same Authenticator app on the same device. Each account will have its own entry in the app, and the app will generate separate codes for each account.

However, keep in mind that while multiple users can use the same Authenticator app on one device, it's important to ensure that each user's accounts are properly segmented within the app. This helps prevent confusion and ensures that the correct code is used for the corresponding account.

Additionally, some services might have limitations or restrictions regarding the use of the same Authenticator app by multiple users. Always follow the guidelines provided by the service you're setting up 2FA for.

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, these were the common practices. Be sure to check the specific guidelines and features of the Authenticator app you are using and any relevant updates that have occurred since then.
