Q: How to type in a one cell and have span across multiple cells

A: by referencing that one cell. If it's A1, in other cells put the entry =A1; if you want to copy it across the full range, more helpful would be to use =$A$1

More complete answer: why don't you give a more complete description of what you're trying to accomplish, because there probably is more to it than your oh-so-brief question reveals.

Only text values can be displayed across the cells to the right if the text is too long for the cell itself, but only if those cells are empty. If the cell to the right is populated with a value or formula, the text will be truncated.

Number and date values will not be displayed across cells.

You can, of course, select multiple cells in a row and set horizontal alignment to 'Center across selection', and it is also possible to merge cells.
