Excel Won't Recognize Copied Cell Data Unless I Hit Enter On Each Cell

Copper Contributor

I am relatively new to Excel and I am trying to make line charts for each of these copied datasets. The issue I am having is that I have to individually press enter on each cell for the number to show on the line chart. The copied numbers are formatted as aligned left and after I hit enter on each they become aligned right as shown in the screenshots.

I have over 1000 cells with number data that I copied and pasted from this external PDF document. Is there any shortcut or way of automatically having this copied data recognized by Excel to show on the line chart? Note: I already have Automatic under Calculation Options turned on. I have seen online that is a common solution to this. I am also using Excel on Mac.Screenshot of line chart with selected data from dataset. Note that only the cells I hit enter and are aligned right show on the chart. The rest don't show up.Screenshot of line chart with selected data from dataset. Make sure that the cells are formatted as General or as Number.

Select an empty cell and copy it.

Select the range with left-aligned numbers (it's OK if there are already right-aligned numbers among them).

Right-click in the selection and select Paste Special... from the context menu, or click the lower half of the Paste button on the Home tab of the ribbon and select Paste Special... from the drop down menu.

Select Add, then click OK.

The cells are already formatted as Number. I'm sorry I don't understand your instructions. Why should I select an empty cell and copy it?

When we use an empty cell to add its value to the cells with the left-aligned values, Excel treats it as if it contains 0. By adding 0 to a text value that looks like a number, we force Excel to convert that text value to a number.

Why don't you try it? It won't take much time...
