Check symbol in drop down list

I want to have the check and cross symbol appear in the drop down list. I have created two cells,  one with the check symbol (Wingdings font) and cross symbol (Wingdings font). When are create the drop down list the symbols appear as "ü" and "û". is there a way to have the list show the symbols?

Alternatively you can use Images.  You can create and insert a picture into the cell and then create 'Alt Text' that will show in the dropdown:

Change the font where the data validation is to Wingdings.

The Data Validation drop down list uses a regular font. not Wingdings.

The check mark and cross symbol are not part of the font Excel uses.

You might use the square root symbol √ and the upper case X instead.
