Check Register

I am trying the Check Register template and am having trouble personalizing it. I want to add to the "categories" column, so I differentiate the places I'm spending my money into more specific categories. I've tried using the help, but I can't figure it out. Is there a way to find someone who will walk me thru it? Or lay it out in a way that's easier to decipher?
