Cannot Open Downloadable Files In Excel 2016
Hello,
I just installed Excel 2016 on my computer. I generally click the download button for an .xlsx file in email. The file will be downloaded and opened in Calc (this is the LibreOffice version of Excel). After installing Excel 2016 I expected it would open up in Excel instead of Calc. However, it still opens the file in Calc. As a current workaround, I can go into the "Downloads" folder, right-click on the file and then choose to open the file with Excel 2016.
I tried to find an answer in a few Google searches. I tried all of the possible fixes in the below article but that did not resolve the issue. I did try to repair Excel as well as uninstall and re-install it.

I have attached a screenshot. If you look at the bottom left side of the screenshot, you will notice it shows the symbol for LibreOffice's Calc application. This is where I need it to show the icon for Excel so I can click on it and open the file in Excel.
I would bet there is a setting I need to choose to get all downloaded files to open with Excel instead of with Calc but I do not know where that setting is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
To me, it sounds like an issue withthe default program for the filetype in your operating system.
If you have Windows 10, here's how you would change it:
Start > Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Scroll down and select "Choose default apps by filetype"
You'll then see all the filetypes and the default programs to open them. Looks for .csv, .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, etc... and reassociate Excel with those filetypes.
I hope that works! If not, try searching online for Change Default Program

Hi Bryant,
I Google searched how to change the default program in Windows 7 and got the info I needed. This did resolve the issue. I appreciate your reply!
