Top Feedback Summary for November 17

Microsoft

Hello there, Insiders! We’re back with your top feedback items, and we’re moving several things around for this last update in November. Let’s jump right into it!

First, we have an update to vertical tabs. Enable vertical tabs feature is now Planned for January. While a lot of Edge Insiders currently have this feature in our Dev and Canary channels, we plan on officially closing this item out once it’s live in all of our channels. We expect this to make it into more channels starting with Edge 88, which will reach Stable in January; we'll make sure to keep y'all in the loop if this changes. The team would love to hear your thoughts on vertical tabs, so please continue to submit your feedback through the browser!

Another popular request from users like yourselves is the warning that you are going to close all tabs when you exit the browser. This week, we are marking Ask users if they want to close all tabs when they close a browser window as Planned for December. Insiders should start seeing this in Canary then; keep an eye out for whenever that option appears for you!

Next up, PDF documents now support comments! Vyankatesh and the PDF team posted a detailed Forums post about how this feature works. With this, we’re closing out Add “text notes” feature to PDF files as Addressed. The team has been working hard to bring you all the PDF features you are looking for, and you can see where we were back in June in the PDF Roadmap and our other PDF updates back in September. If you have feedback about PDF features, you can always drop a comment in any of those threads for the team to see.

For our final update, an update to our look and feel. Back in July, we talked about how Fluent Design is an evolving system, and the Edge team will continue to align with the changes as they happen. Examples of this include the soft, rounded corners you see across Microsoft products and continuing with the iconography updates we’ve introduced into Edge 88’s settings and menus. Today, we are marking Update the user interface with the Fluent Design System as Alternative Addressed. It’s important to note that even though we are considering this overly broad item addressed, the team will continue to track specific design requests individually. If you have a specific design change in mind that you would love for the team to see, head to the menu in the top right of your browser > Help and feedback > Send feedback.

That’s it for this week! Next week is a holiday for us in the US, Thanksgiving! We will not be doing our regular Dev channel update, which means no Top Feedback or Change Summary updates. We also do not expect to be doing any minor Dev, Beta, or Stable releases (we expect the Stable channel to receive Edge 87 this week). However, Canary will be updated on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We will chat at you all the first week of December!

Hi,
thanks for the update, I think it's a wise decision to delay the vertical tabs until Edge 88, it still needs more refinements.

about comments in PDF, can you make it like Edge legacy, where you only have to highlight a text and the comment/copy/search appear as a pop up next to it?
right now we have to right-click and choose comment.

also are we going to get auto-play blocking in December? the true auto-play blocking. currently setting it to "block" (using flag) doesn't work on most websites.

There are still a LOT of design changes to be made. Tooltips, dropdown menus, and right-click menus are all still Material Design and not Fluent Design and are inconsistent with the rest of Windows (no transparency, no reveal effects, no animations). The new icons are also inconsistent with the rest of Windows, unless icons will be updated across the rest of Windows too (any information on that? [EDIT: looking more closely here, it looks like the new icons are going to be the same across all of Microsoft]). Material Design loading wheels can still be found in HTML video and in the Updates section of the Settings menu.

Why is "Update the user interface with the Fluent Design System" being marked as any form of "addressed" when there is still so much that is inconsistent with Fluent Design? Only one small portion of the design is being changed, and even that is inconsistent with Fluent Design since it's using mobile icons in a desktop space (which would be consistent if these icons are being updated across all of Microsoft, but we haven't heard anything about that).

@martinnn Everything is fluent, just now checked.

@MissyQsaid "we are marking Update the user interface with the Fluent Design System as Alternative Addressed."

Ridiculous. People wanted transparency effects.

Microsoft nowadays is just like this, they brag about gallons of fruits, and just give you a single piece if peanut. Talking about "Update the user interface with the Fluent Design System" and giving out just "Icon redesign", wth!, Although I would admit that I really like the redesigned icons, they did a great job, but transparency and reveal effects are the ones we are hoping.
About open the favourite
I'd like to add a feature that allows you to open favorites in a new tab with a single left mouse button, instead of covering the current using page. Here are some reasons.
First of all, when you click, the left mouse button is more comfortable and easier to press than the middle mouse button. Second, whether it is the middle mouse button or CTRL+ pressing left mouse button to open the favorites, the page will open in the background without jumping to a new page. Of course, pressing Ctrl + Shift + left mouse button at the same time can achieve the desired effect, but it is very troublesome. It is not as convenient as clicking the left mouse button to open the favorite. Finally, I also hope that developers can see my suggestion and open a separate post for users to discuss the practicability of this function. Thank you very much.
I'd love transparency effect too, but I've only seen it on UWP apps so far

@cheeseleader I was hoping for transparent tabs at the top.

Thank you @MissyQ for update.

Add note is on-demand feature.

Users would be very excited for vertical tab.

@ethanmenzel  And imagine transparent vertical tabs with tab previews. And collections !!

Win UI / Project reunion should make it possible for edge to be more like a UWP app and if it doesn't chromium edge will continue looking like a toy compared to the original Microsoft Edge.

WinUI 3 yeah, currently in beta but once makes it to stable and integrated into Windows 10, Edge should start using it quickly, to set an example for other developers and also because it's a 1st party program.

@MissyQ Personally I would really appreciate any UI improvements to make Edge more aligned with Fluent Design, I won't rehash what others have said, and the updated icons are a nice touch, but there really needs to be much more fundamental UI changes before Edge is even close to being aligned with Fluent Design. Personally, I really like the Fluent Design UI, and I loved the UI of the legacy Edge.

Use this extension, it automatically switches to the newly opened tab, from webs or from favorites.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/switch-to-new-tab/lfpdoeknpnclenhlmblmenpafkbcgdbg/related

CTRL + left click

Middle mouse button

Right-click and open favorites

all of them work with that extension. extensions are here to add rare features to Edge for those that want it.

We can certainly hope that they'll use WinUI. If they haven't made any real effort to make Edge align with Fluent Design now, I think it's pretty likely that Edge will still keep Material Design going into the future.

But Edge's design is still good--Google did a great job with it!
Yeah, if they can't use WinUI in Mac and Linux, at least do it for the Windows version of Edge
Are they working on something called link previews because that would be a nice feature to have as well as both tab previews?
I really hope they could do it for the Mac especially if Apple can do it on the Mac (Yeah I know apple created the Mac) then Why can't Microsoft. Have then Hire Apple employees or people that know MAc well enough to make fluent design happen without WinUI.

This LInk Features currently not available in the new Microsoft Edge really shows you how much progress the people at Microsoft really have made in the transition of features from the Legacy edge to the New Chromium Edge.

They need to update that list lol
