Top feedback summary for December 17

Microsoft

Note: This is no longer the most recent top feedback summary. You can always find the latest at https://aka.ms/MSEdgeTopFeedback.

Hey everyone, we’re back again with the latest top feedback summary for the new Microsoft Edge.

This week we’re happy to highlight that the extensions store now supports search, addressing one of our top feedback items. Thanks for the feedback that helped drive the development of this feature!

On a related note, we’d like to share our thinking about feedback that you’d like to see support for “mouse gestures” in the new Microsoft Edge. This feature would allow users to perform basic to advanced browser functions through simple gestures with the mouse. In the previous Microsoft Edge we supported mouse gestures through an extension that was authored by Microsoft, but we don’t think that we’ll need to do the same for the new Microsoft Edge because there are existing Chromium-compatible mouse gesture extensions. Today our extensions store opened for new submissions, and we expect that one or more of these existing extensions will be submitted to our store by their owners. If this doesn’t happen, we’ll reconsider our approach. In the meantime, users can install Chromium-compatible extensions from other stores. See our help article for instructions on how to do this.

We also have a new discussion post this week on the topic of bringing back the reading list feature from legacy Microsoft Edge. While we aren’t planning to do this right away, or use the same approach we used before, we do plan to investigate how we can build something customers will love. To learn more, head over to the discussion post and share your thoughts on the future of reading list.

Finally, a quick mention that this is our last update of the year as the team takes a break for the holiday season. There will be no Dev channel updates or top feedback updates on December 24 and December 31. We will be back with another update on or around January 7, and of course we’re all looking forward to general availability on January 15. We want to send a big thank you for helping us build the new Microsoft Edge in 2019. Happy holidays and see you next year!

Hi, Thanks for the update,
But are Favorite Sync postponed to the next year? it's really a long time to wait...

that's the only reason I still have to keep Google chrome on my computer against my will because on Edge insider Canary and Dev sync is not working.

@David Rubino

And STILL no mention of adding the facility to have middle-clicks on favourites in favourites menus leave the menu open for further clicks without having to reopen and re-navigate each time, as in IE, classic Edge and Firefox. So there's still no way I'm using Chromium Edge.

Meanwhile Mozilla have just given me the thing I (and, I presume, other people) asked for in Firefox Preview on Android - the option to move the bottom controls to the top. Guess which company I am feeling all warm and fuzzy about.

This is a good point. For now, you can control+click, so there's no reason they can't extend the function to support middle clicking.
Please add option for scrollable tabstrip to the list -- it's very cumbersome when the 'close' button disappears from tabs if too many are open!

Loving the progress updates!

@GrahamJockeyyes PLEASE! We really really need scrollable tabstrip back! Also please add Set Tabs Aside back and Fluent Design too!

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Discussions/Add-the-epub-reader-from-EdgeUWP-to-Edge-Chromium... 52 likes now, please consider adding it. I don't remember many discussions with more than 50 likes.

@David Rubino @MissyQ @fawkes-serafinski

There's still no mention of scrollable tabs. Tiny tabs is a massive issue that nearly everyone encounters that can be fixed with scrollable tabs, like in Spartan edge and Firefox.

I also have an older post that talks about the overall layout and it would be nice for the team to take a look at it, as some of the suggestions are easy to implement and can improve the overall experience.

Tabs and dark mode

Thanks for the update @David Rubino.

I'm hoping next year there may be an update/discussion around adding:

  •  the options to 'set these tabs aside', 'see all your tabs', and 'restore tabs',
  •  the tab preview,
  • an option to open a new tab to a custom URL.

@David Rubino

When the mouse gestures support is unplaned, will the official "Mouse Gestures" extension from EdgeHTML Edge available in Chromium Edge Addon store? In the developer doc, migrate a extension from old edge seems easy.

@Jason_Han strokesplus.net maybe a good choice, it allows you to use mouse gesture everywhere on windows.

Ask users if they want to close all tabs when they close a browser window ???
Mouse Middle Clicks to open new tabs when clicked on the tabs bar ???
Move the opened tabs to the bookmarks toolbar with the just the mouse ???

You know just basically the comfy features that in Firefox ??
Not moving to Edge until these are supported, not to mention that importing Firefox in Edge is broken too !!!

@David Rubino

The current InPrivate UI looks too chrome like, it's too robotic, and it can be hard to notice when dark theme is activated. If it was bolded in like how it is for edge classic, it would be much better.

@David Rubino

I hope you will reconsider bringing over the Microsoft mouse gesture extension.  Personally, I prefer to limit the use of third party extensions, so relying on the existing chrome extensions would amount to this being a lost feature for me.

The current DEV Reading List is very good, I would suggest that you add the offline function to it, so that when a page is added, it can be accessed if the user has no internet, if possible it automatically updates , Happy Holidays.

@David Rubino Having an issue with DEV 80.0.361.9 where CPU goes up over 400% on a consistent basis out of nowhere. Been reporting it but has been this way for weeks now.

Like most above, I'm quite disappointed mouse gestures won't be natively integrated. That's a sadly missed opportunity for improving productivity.

In the mean time, I'd like to plug another vote for the Set Aside tabs feature. I didn't know how much I would want to use this feature, until I hit a moment today:

Stuck on a task that's waiting on a reply for someone, with its associated 8+ tabs. I don't really use favorites that much for these "quick switch" tasks, but I'd like to start work on something else. I'm currently just using two windows, but that's a little trickier to navigate with an auto-hide taskbar.

In lieu of Set Aside tabs (uneducated opinion coming in): I'd love for even just a much easier way to add all open tabs to a new Collection. Currently, it takes a long [n+2] amount of clicks, where n = number of tabs. 1. Click the Collections button, 2. Click "Start New Collection".

I'd could happily live with a "Set Aside" button that essentially used the Collections backend: i.e., send all open tabs to a New Collection. It should automatically add all tabs open: I shouldn't need to manually go through each tab and click "Add current page".

@David Rubino Still, want the ability that right-button click of mouse can give different search engine options at given selected words or sentences on the webpage.

@David RubinoSorry, but I have to say that your view on the mouse gesture part is very flawed. All the available extensions so far make me click the right mouse button to activate the gesture. That is not smooth or convenient at all. In Edge I just swipe left an right, smooth and comfortable. That is browsing how I was used to even since the old Macbook days 2009. Not supporting it makes me simply stay away, since a comfortable use of the browser isn´t given. Terrible decision, seriously.

PS: You seem not to understand, that the general problem isn´t a big deal using an actual mouse, but the built in touchpads of most laptops

@matb86 If you hit the feedback button while its happening, and click the blue underlined 'send diagnostic data', and then 'recreate my problem', and start recording, then they can see what exactly is causing the problem.
