I have simple question from end user but it is important. How to save email attachment in MS Outlook to SharePoint online site? Can I save as directly?

I have tried use https://mycompany.sharepoint.com in the save as dialog box (address field), I can see my sites dan document folder but when I click save, the file failed to upload.

  Any help is appreciated.

This is not yet possible would advice to use a tool like harmon.ie which interacts with SharePoint.

You need currently a third party tool for this, but I think this feature is coming in the future since this is something we already have when working with O365 Groups

Just to expand @Juan Carlos González Martín answer, you can save local attachments in Outlook 2016 to OneDrive for Business and Office 365 Groups from a picker.  It's not hard to imagine this being expanded to document libraries in due course.

It was  announced last week at Ignite that the OneDrive for Business Sync Client will support SharePoint libraries: https://blogs.office.com/2016/09/26/sharepoint-online-sync-preview-headlines-ignite-announcements-fo...

To support you scenario, have the user setup the new sync client to sync the document library where they want to store the email attachments. Then they can save a local copy in the folder for the document library. The sync client will then take care of "uploading" the file to the SharePoint document libary.

I'm not sure if you have access to Flow with your Office 365 subscription level, but there were several demos at Ignite showing how to use Flow to automaticilly save email attachments to SharePoint.  That could be another option.

We are using webdav-based mappings for this purpose, as written in this article:

Yes, try out the link in David's reply.  It's very simple to set up the new preview for OneDrive to sync SharePoint Online document libraries.  I happened to be at Ignite and enabled this for a couple of customers soon after the annoucement.

Here is the link to the specific steps:

Hi Faisal,

If your only requirement is to transfer the email (and or attachment) from Outlook to SharePoint as an msg file then the sync client is the best way forward.
If you have additional requirements (e.g. to extract email metadata and store the values in SharePoint columns, email preview capabilities in SharePoint, custom metadata support, email documents in SharePoint, ...) then you will need to resort to 3rd party tools. See https://collab365.directory/office365-sharepoint/email-tools-for-sharepoint-and-office-365/ for a list with several tools. Most tools use Outlook Add-ins but there are also browser-based solutions.

is it suitable for connecting to sharepoint online?

Yes, it is, we use it with SPO.

I'm using harmon.ie for this - hate for actualy have to use a thirt party tool - but it is way better than any solution out now by microsoft.

With SharePoint Online and Office/Outlook 2016 you have three options:

  1. Use out of the box capabilities, although limited in a few areas and key support at this time for OneDrive for Business only
  2. WebDAV which personally I don't like
  3. Third Party Solutions, and on this there a few and they come in two flavours
    • Traditional COM / vsto add-in (desktop client installed on each machine)
    • Office Store Add-in (app) which can work in Outlook 2013, 2016 but also on the web browser and macOS (very nice):

Note: If using the

  •    Traditional COM add-in, most third party solutions will save as an msg file (more proprietary to Outlook, not exchange)
  •    Office store add-in, you will be saving an email in .eml format (can still open in Outlook fine)

You didn't mention it in your question but most business would like to capture the email attributes when saving the email.  This pretty much removes option 1 and option 2.

Further to the above, you will find both paid and free offering from third parties... just google save emails to SharePoint... but hopefully the above will save some wondering...

I'm associated with OnePlace Solutions which has both a OnePlaceMail desktop and Office store app offering to do the above... but as I say we are one of a few in the market so look around and work through which best meets your business requirements.

Hi James,

Could you point me to additional information about the Office Store addin. I've only found this page http://www.oneplacesolutions.com/oneplacemail-for-office365-sharepoint-online.html

I'm interested in just saving and attaching emails/attachments from/to outlook/sharepoint. Your pricing seems more competitive than harmon.ies.
I'd like to know what features are missing in the Office Store Addin compared to the MSI version.
Also, a big part of our strategy are Office 365 Groups.

Hi Ivan,

You can reach the OnePlaceMail Office Store Add-in directly on the link below:
https://store.office.com/en-us/app.aspx?assetid=WA104380723&ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US&appredirect=fals...

The Office Store Add-in allows you to save emails and attachments, capturing both the items and promoting email attribute to SharePoint columns. It also supports Office 365 Groups.

In the spirit of this forum, I think it's best we take any further discussion around feature/benefit offline. Please reach out to me directly james.fox(at)oneplacesolutions.com to discuss the differences between the msi and Office Store add-in offering.

I came across you post, and since it’s from 2017 you may already have solved your issue.

We have had the same issue and have searched for solutions for the last year without finding one. Hence, we decided to develop a solution that is able to save and attaching emails/attachments from/to outlook/sharepoint and teams. For small teams we made the solution free to the community.

So if you still looking for a free solution, you are welcome to reach out.
