Join this AMA to ask us your questions about what to expect during a migration from Windows 10 to Windows 11 in your environment. Today, you manage your Windows 10 estate using an established process, cadence, tools, servicing model, a ring strategy, security model, etc. so what should one expect in moving to a Windows 11 estate?
Submit your questions during this live hour--or submit questions early (by posting a Comment below) and catch up when it's convenient for you.
This AMA did not have a video feed, but our speakers responded to comments live during the scheduled time in discussion below.

- bethpurnellBrass ContributorHas it started yet? I only see AMA in progress screen.
- same here Trevor_Rusher. next to the video if I check the notification bell on the top right it does not open / jump to the notified reply or post so it is quite hard to keep track.
- GovGeekBrass ContributorSame. And the other video in the same time slot is broken.
- Celina SantanaCopper Contributori see the same issue as well.
- RichardThor-58Copper ContributorI think having Groups I. the start menu tiles was one of the best features of Windows 10. Any plans of bringing this back into 11?

Hi Richard, We are constantly looking at commercial customer feedback and business needs for Start Menu including the desire for Groups. Please leverage Feedback Hub to submit the suggestion or feel free to pm me with more details on your scenario and feedback. Thanks, -Kevin - there are a ton of requests on groups and full screen start in the Feedback hub.

Welcome everyone! I'm Kevin Mineweaser, Sr. Program Manager for Commercial Windows Experiences.
- KurtGMoody21Copper ContributorWhat is the latest status of potential Windows 11 and Gen 7 Intel based Surface compatibility?
- not only Microsoft Surface but generally Gen 7 Intel. They cannot be considered "old tech" as home users really don't give much on any security improvements that would cost them some hundreds or thousand+ euros just because the CPU does not have the latest virtualization stuff. from over 50 devices in my friendhood only 6 so far could run Windows 11. This is ridicilous.
- KrisDebIron ContributorI personally like the new idea of modern environment and Windows 11, new reqs etc. But it will not be adopted and I think W11 will be another Vista or 8, sorry to be pessimistic.
- Laser235Copper ContributorWill System be added back to start menu on Windows 11 Right click start menu and click system takes you to About this PC page.
- DeletedThanks for the feedback! If you right click on the start menu and then click on settings by default it takes you to the System page within settings.
- ThomasTrombleyIron ContributorGood morning/afternoon/evening. Unfortunately, I don't have specific details on that. Please feel free to take advantage of the feedback hub to share, especially if you're running Windows 11 through the Windows Insider Program preview build of Windows 11.
- GovGeekBrass ContributorIn testing Windows 11, I feel crippled by the new Start menu. I'm not technically a fan of the "Live" part of the tiles, but I definitely miss being able to group my apps based on purpose. I'd like to see that make its way back into Windows 11 as an option if not by default. Also, if you're going to keep the new layout, I'd strongly suggest removing "Recommended" in favor of "Recent" in the menu. Overall though, it's been a good experience, even when playing MSFS2020!
- R_StarzuftIron ContributorSame here. Grouping tiles is a benefit of Start in Windows 10. The current start seems more like a phone menu then one on a desktop. Windows 10 desktop is more adaptable than Windows 11 on. For some users the space below the icons is not as useful. Even on a phone the Home screen can be adjusted emphasize what the user finds efficient . Not sure what specific audience wants the Windows 11 setup. Overall appearance of Window 11 is nice just not as functional as Windows 10 start. Muscle memory still keeps me clicking and right - clicking in the corner...
- ThomasTrombleyIron ContributorGreat feedback, thank you! I would highly encourage you to share this via the Feedback hub as well. I know that the team is ACTIVELY iterating based on feedback that rolls into this vehicle, so please do so, especially since you're taking advantage of the Windows 11 build via the Windows Insider Program.
- Laser235Copper ContributorHow is licensing affected when systems are licensed for Windows 10, and they get updated to Windows 11 , via Windows Update, free upgrade , or feature update ?
- DeletedIf I understand the question correctly there is no change on the licensing, if you had Windows 10 Pro, you are upgraded to Windows 11 Pro, if you had Windows 10 E3 you will be upgraded to Windows 11 E3 and so on
- raksahooCopper ContributorWhat are the deciding factors for an organization to choose Windows 10 21H2 in place of Windows 11?
- Dave_BackmanIron ContributorGreat question rakahoo but obviously a complex question given every enterprise will have a number of decision points that will have to be factored into any strategic decision to migrate to Windows 11. Certainly there are no enterprise licensing implications. My guidance is to create a formal program around your early adopters for Insiders that is inclusive of LOB apps owners, security folks, a good cross section of end users with a formal feedback mechanism that will assist in identifying those key benefits and capabilities that might make for a compelling decision point to start the migration at a time and pace that makes sense for your org.
- "the deciding factors" imho: if they have the staff or can hire them for re-training. Explorer, start screen, settings and how to use them efficiently. next: compatible hardware that meets the requirements. next: UX some might have Win11 and some Win10 which is a big difference in the UI and for the support staff.
- Laser235Copper ContributorYou might think that licensing might be a factor. How is licensing affected when updating to Windows 11
- Dennis_EwaldBrass ContributorTo my understanding licensing should be the same as before https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/windows-11
- Laser235Copper ContributorWhen Updating to Windows 11 either via Windows Updates, or feature updates will Windows 11 change the start menu adding unwanted apps like spotify, xbox, messenger, etc. Can those dynamic apps be blocked from installing or being added to the new start menu ?
- KevinMineweaser_MSFT
Microsoft
Hi Laser, For Windows commercial you should not see any new apps added after upgrade. -Kevin
- Laser235Copper ContributorNot sure if this is the right forum. Is Windows 10 21H2 going to be a version of Windows similar to Windows 11? I am testing Windows 11 which says it is version 21H2 . Windows 21H2, should be Windows 10 21H2 .
- SumitDhimanIron ContributorHi, No. 21H2 isn't similar to Windows 11. Both Windows versions have a 21H2 release. https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2021/07/15/introducing-the-next-feature-update-to-windows-10-21h2/
- Laser235Copper ContributorThat could be somewhat confusing if you have multiple versions of Windows running in your environment. In the last two feature updates Microsoft has added DisplayVersion of 20H2, 21H1 using same Release id 2009, is Microsoft transitioning to using DisplayVersion ?
