would be very interesting to know when all the MSIX Goodness (except the simple already included MSIX deployment) come to Configuration Manager TPs and Releases. I hope very soon for MSIX App Attach, Config Packages, Updates, Bundles etc.
  • from the theoretical knowledge it seems that MSIX is still a niche and has some limitations due to technical reasons. Windows 11 will allow non MSIX apps (win32) in the Store. Which is great yet: What is the strategy with MSIX for on-premises application deployment outside AVD? Is it considered to be a better successor of MSI and other installers? Some would want to have an easy usage of MSIX for Windows Server, same for Winget to manage their software deployment and dynamic assignment (msix app attach) on Windows 10/11 on-premises and definetely Windows Server 2019 and later. What are your plans for these scenarios? Can we expect that MSIX will be a universal tool to deploy apps on-premises for Client and Servers? Outside of Microsoft Projects on github I see pretty much no one adopting MSIX as a default or common installer, very unfortunately. Is this something you are working on and what is the feedback from developers and vendors about MSIX?

MSIX is the evolution of our Windows Installer. We are working actively with several vendors and developers to package their apps as MSIX. The Store today supports developers submitting their apps as MSIX and majority of apps today in the Store are packaged as MSIX. We encourage you to talk to your ISVs and package their app as MSIX.

We are looking into adopting the Windows Package Manager to as many supported OSes as possible. At this time there are limitations in the Server 2019 that prevent the Windows Package Manager from running correctly, so it is not supported. We are exploring Windows Package Manager and MSIX app attach for user on future Windows Server versions. For Windows Server 2022, feel free to download the insider version of the Windows Package Manager and let us know your feedback: https://github.com/microsoft/winget-cli

Hello John, here is a blog from an expert I regularly exchange on twitter doing AppV and MSIX as main business. https://www.andreasnick.com/112-install-winget-and-appinstaller-on-windows-server-2022.html His passion was key for me to even "bother" with MSIX and/or winget on Windows Server. I really hope that the integration of MSIX in Windows 2022 can continue because it is an LTSC release with obvious restrictions. Have you heard anything about Windows Server SAC? It seems it is completely gone.

MSIX seems like a great solution to packaging applications, however I've been experiencing issues with packaging applications using MSIX, and it doesn't seem like it's very stable Packaging Adobe Acrobat XI (older version) results in the program launching, then immidiately closing, based on the technical side of MSIX I would assume that it should not close at all? -> It's tough to troubleshoot and I haven't seen a lot of work being done on MSIX for a very long time

A few common issues with repackaging could be the app is the app is writing to the working directory. We have the Package Support Framework to help solve problems like this. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/psf/package-support-framework-overview If that does not solve the problem we can hopefully help you troubleshoot more through the MSIX Tech Community. Feel free to add a follow up here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/msix-packaging-and-tools/bd-p/MSIX-Packaging

Yeah, I just wish there was a little bit more straightforward documentation, with examples of packaging well known applications Currently I've attempted to package 1. Citrix Worskpace 2. Adobe Acrobat (both new and old) 3. Google Chrome 4. And many more Citrix and Chrome seems to work, however I wish I knew why it didn't save the profiles I create in Chrome prior to finishing the MSIX setup (as I've understood it should capture all changes the application makes prior to the final step) Citrix works fine, unless you use it for SSO, even with the correct registry settings imported into the MSIX registry it does not at all function with a Always on VPN client locally, theres been few months since I trialed this out, but it feels like a solution for the developers to originally package their app as MSIX rather than a nice solution for IT personell to repackage app for distribution through Intune
