Understanding Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 for hybrid work
Event details
Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 are complementary products that enable every organization to deliver Windows from the Cloud to its employees. Understanding how to select the right product(s) to address your organization’s needs is a critical first step. This session builds on the Microsoft Ignite 2022 on-demand session Experience Windows in the cloud with Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365, diving deeper into the IT admin experience of each product and the choices you’ll need to make before, during, and after deployment. Join us as product managers Eric Orman and Roop Kiran Chevuri click another level down on this all-important topic.
This session is part of the Microsoft Technical Takeoff: Windows + Intune. Add it to your calendar, RSVP for event reminders, and post your questions and comments below! This session will also be recorded and available on demand shortly after conclusion of the live event. |

- JawanLCopper ContributorRegarding VDI, i see there is an easy way to shutdown vms in azure but is there an easy way to set vms to a timetable of starting and shutting down.

- ESJeffLBrass ContributorDoes MS offer a cost comparison for an environment to understand if it is best to stay on Azure VDI vs Cloud PC? Only focusing on cost for those users that have persistent VDI's

ESJeffL , good question and I get this a lot, let me give you my elevator pitch, DM me if desired and we can talk more. Short answer to your question. I like to think of the value of W365 synonymous to the value customers got when migrating from Exchange on-prem to Exchange online. With Exchange online you assign a license and in minutes a mailbox is created, with Exchange on-prem there is so much overhead for setup and massive amounts of maintenance. W365 is a SaaS just like Exchange Online, made simple and made to run in the Cloud. The value is simplicity and speed. The time to deployment is super easy with W365 as I explain, 1 license assignment and 4 questions so customers already using Intune can adopt it super quick.
- ESJeffLBrass ContributorBut in this case we are comparing two cloud solutions. We do have a on-prem VDI which is usually cheaper than cloud but trying to understand why we would use Cloud PC when we already have Azure VDI in place.

Hi Caleb, it's not yet possible to use Azure AD PIM to restrict local admin access on Intune managed VMs. We expect there might be some technical challenges to do so.

- HeyHey16KSteel ContributorWe are currently comparing W365 with VMWare Horizon for Azure. Appreciate they overlap - is there a MS doc detailing the pros/cons of both and which you would use in what scenario please?
- EricOrman
Microsoft
No, although there is a link in the presentation to request trial licenses for Windows 365 to evaluate the product.
- ESJeffLBrass Contributorso the cloud pc can be AADJ or HADJ right?
- EricOrman
Microsoft
Windows 365 supports both AADJ and HAADJ. Be advised that if HAADJ is selected you must also bring an azure subscription which has networking line of sight to your AD domain controller in order to complete the HAADJ process. We find that customers like to use AADJ with Microsoft hosted network for the simplicity because no azure subscription is needed/required. - DavidBelanger
Microsoft
Yes, Windows 365 supports both AADJ and HAADJ hosts. This can be selected when creating the provisioning policy. We generally recommend using AADJ when possible.
- Richard Blanco Jr.Brass ContributorHi, but selecting AADJ will not give you access to servers or resources running in your own tenant right? In order to access a file server, LOB software ,etc? What do you not get if using AADJ instead of HAADJ? thanks
- ErinDayBrass ContributorFor AVD personal, A challenge has always been that a IT support person has difficulty configuring our troubleshooting the device because they cannot logon to the machine as only one user is allowed to be assigned. It also means we can never re-use the same personal machine, it has to be reprovisioned. Will either of these 2 pain-points get addressed in the future?
- DavidBelanger
Microsoft
Hi Erin, for the purpose of troubleshooting or managing a VM, an admin can access personal hosts with tools like Azure Bastion. We are also looking into adding an option to shadow a session so admins can help users.
Can you tell me more about the reason you'd like to re-use the same personal desktop between two users?
- ErinDayBrass Contributorwe have extremely complex networking and firewall rules in our WVD environments to segregate and segment PCI, PII data . We have used AVD pooled and personal devices for this use case, where we can very granularly control and configure that access. Will Windows 365 have the equivalent control or is AVD the better solution?
- EricOrman
Microsoft
With Windows 365 you can choose to deploy Cloud PC's into a Microsoft hosted network (only AADJ is supported) or bring your azure subscription and deploy Cloud PC's into a VNET that you manage and control where both AADJ and HAADJ are supported. When creating a provisioning profile you select the exact subnet within your azure subscription to deploy CLoud PC's into. I cover this in greater detail in my session later this week, here is link = https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-events/windows-365-provisioning-and-azure-network-connection-anc/ec-p/3652918
