Understanding Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 for hybrid work
Event details
Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 are complementary products that enable every organization to deliver Windows from the Cloud to its employees. Understanding how to select the right product(s) to address your organization’s needs is a critical first step. This session builds on the Microsoft Ignite 2022 on-demand session Experience Windows in the cloud with Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365, diving deeper into the IT admin experience of each product and the choices you’ll need to make before, during, and after deployment. Join us as product managers Eric Orman and Roop Kiran Chevuri click another level down on this all-important topic.
This session is part of the Microsoft Technical Takeoff: Windows + Intune. Add it to your calendar, RSVP for event reminders, and post your questions and comments below! This session will also be recorded and available on demand shortly after conclusion of the live event. |
- MartyDueyCopper ContributorShout out to Heather_Poulsen as one of the STARS for this week's series of Technical Takeoff sessions. Great work, Heather!
- MichaelHildebrandMicrosoftHeather ROCKS!
- ErinDayBrass ContributorWill Windows 365 and AVD merge into a single portal at any point?
- Roop_Kiran_ChevuriMicrosoftWindows 365 Admin experience is targeted for Endpoint admins so they can manage it similar to other PC's in their environment whereas Azure Virtual Desktop experience is targeted for Azure Infra Admins who are familiar with operating on VDI and Azure and hence there are two separate portals. Could you provide more details on the scenario where you would like to manage both from one and what your preferred portal would be?
- ErinDayBrass ContributorSometimes we need to provide multisession solutions and some times more specific personal desktops. The one team is managing both solutions, so struggling to see why we would use one over the other.
- ErinDayBrass ContributorFor AVD personal, A challenge has always been that a IT support person has difficulty configuring our troubleshooting the device because they cannot logon to the machine as only one user is allowed to be assigned. It also means we can never re-use the same personal machine, it has to be reprovisioned. Will either of these 2 pain-points get addressed in the future?
- DavidBelangerMicrosoft
Hi Erin, for the purpose of troubleshooting or managing a VM, an admin can access personal hosts with tools like Azure Bastion. We are also looking into adding an option to shadow a session so admins can help users.
Can you tell me more about the reason you'd like to re-use the same personal desktop between two users?
- HeyHey16KSteel ContributorWe are currently comparing W365 with VMWare Horizon for Azure. Appreciate they overlap - is there a MS doc detailing the pros/cons of both and which you would use in what scenario please?
- EricOrmanMicrosoftNo, although there is a link in the presentation to request trial licenses for Windows 365 to evaluate the product.
- ESJeffLBrass ContributorDoes MS offer a cost comparison for an environment to understand if it is best to stay on Azure VDI vs Cloud PC? Only focusing on cost for those users that have persistent VDI's
- EricOrmanMicrosoft
ESJeffL , good question and I get this a lot, let me give you my elevator pitch, DM me if desired and we can talk more. Short answer to your question. I like to think of the value of W365 synonymous to the value customers got when migrating from Exchange on-prem to Exchange online. With Exchange online you assign a license and in minutes a mailbox is created, with Exchange on-prem there is so much overhead for setup and massive amounts of maintenance. W365 is a SaaS just like Exchange Online, made simple and made to run in the Cloud. The value is simplicity and speed. The time to deployment is super easy with W365 as I explain, 1 license assignment and 4 questions so customers already using Intune can adopt it super quick.
- ESJeffLBrass ContributorBut in this case we are comparing two cloud solutions. We do have a on-prem VDI which is usually cheaper than cloud but trying to understand why we would use Cloud PC when we already have Azure VDI in place.

Don't be shy. This is a great forum to ask your questions, but also to share information about use cases and scenarios you need to support. Post now or anytime this week in the Comments.
- MartyDueyCopper ContributorJust to be clear, I believe that Eric just stated that Windows updates are applied to a Cloud PC using policies established by the Intune Admin. Does this apply to security updates as well?
- EricOrmanMicrosoftYes, a Cloud PC should be managed and governed in the same way as a physical PC managed by Intune. All the apps, settings and configurations that are deployed to physical PC's are applicable to Cloud PC's too.
