Event details
As an IT admin, you play a crucial role in supporting people of all abilities across your organization. With the built-in accessibility features in Windows 11, you can make it easier for everyone to customize their Windows experience in the way that works best for them.
We’ll go over some of the latest improvements in Windows for people with disabilities, such as system-wide live captions, Focus mode, voice access, and Narrator enhancements. We’ll also provide tips and recommendations on how to make sure people can utilize and customize the features they need. And, of course since this is an Ask Microsoft Anything (AMA), we’ll be here to answer your questions!
Post your questions in the Comments below. We'll have experts responding in the live stream and others in chat. |

Hello Diane, Here is a great article on how to use these features! https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-use-focus-in-windows-11-cbcc9ddb-8164-43fa-8919-b9a2af072382 - Eddie_Leonard

You can access Focus settings in Settings > System > Focus You can read more about Focus settings here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-use-focus-in-windows-11-cbcc9ddb-8164-43fa-8919-b9a2af072382
- Ghizzi_dBrass ContributorAre you working on support for cognitive, neurodiverse accessibility challenges?
- Ghizzi_dBrass Contributorhehe as if on cue you answered 😉
- DSWilsonCopper ContributorWhat do you recommend for those that are color blind? Red/Green being the primary issue. (Not sure if this has already been addressed as I joined late) Thank you! Diane

Thanks for the feedback and questions. Take a look at our list of Accessibility features for Vision - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/accessibility-tools-for-vision-b3c57606-e0af-46d2-97b4-fa6b5fba4fa1 - Char_CheesmanBronze Contributor

- Ghizzi_dBrass ContributorQ: Will we be able to edit and style transcripts from Teams recordings soon?
- Ben_Watt
Microsoft
That's not something we can answer, but you could take a look at the Teams Feedback Portal and post your suggestion there: https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/forum/ad198462-1c1c-ec11-b6e7-0022481f8472- Ghizzi_dBrass ContributorThank you Ben. I will do, as this is a critical function for the Education and wider public sector in EU/UK as we're subject to the PSBAR 2018/ Equality Act 2010. Education here is struggling to meet the requirements particularly in the STT / Captions / Audio Description / Transcripts area. Combination of critical lack or funds, resources, knowledge and skills. In my own institution staff and students have to use labyrinthine processes to generate accurate captions/transcripts for teaching and learning content. We produce vast quantities of content too. It's a major stressor for all.
- Karyn FillhartBrass ContributorAbsolutely LOVE the mouse pointer options! I present a LOT and making the pointer large and colorful without having to add an extension is important. One thing I love about Microsoft is that so many accessibility features are built-in and don't require extra installs or 3rd party apps.
- Karyn FillhartBrass ContributorMy husband (computer teacher) taught me the CTRL key to pulse the mouse years ago and it is a great tip. Thanks for mentioning that hidden feature, Hector.
- Ghizzi_dBrass ContributorYes I'm seeing that on the public preview but the scroll back isn't a suitable replacement for being able to search the transcript
- Ben_Watt
Microsoft
Hey, didn't want to leave this unanswered, but also wanted to make sure I double checked on this one before I came back to you. The Public Preview doesn't have all features just now, many are still to come, but in terms of transcript search, that isn't a Premium feature. What is a Premium feature is being able to do things like speaker search and other AI-powered features within the transcript.- Ghizzi_dBrass ContributorThank you very much Ben appreciate your time and clarification
- Ghizzi_dBrass ContributorAs a deaf/HoH person I'd describe Transcription as an accessibility function ;). I depend on it to functionally work
- Ben_Watt
Microsoft
Transcription is still there in Teams, it's the translation that is a Teams Premium feature. Quite agree - I rely on both Captions and transcriptions.
- Karyn FillhartBrass ContributorLive captions in Windows 11 is awesome, but is there a plan in the works for a translation option? Especially now that Microsoft Translator is no longer web-based or on a Windows app?

- Karyn FillhartBrass ContributorI agree with Hector about the PowerPoint Present Live option, but it doesn't have a conversation option. For example, if attendees have questions. The web-based (and Windows app) Microsoft Translator allowed for a conversation. Many teachers used it for discussions when they have students who speak another language. I used it when teaching Office skills to a class of students all new to America who spoke 5 different languages and they were able to interact for the first time. Teachers shouldn't have to use their mobile devices.
- Stephen RoseCopper ContributorI would love to understand how this group feels about the live caption and other key accessibility features found in Teams have moved to a paid product (Teams Premium) and how those effects the quality of these features in Windows?
- Ben_Watt
Microsoft
And just in case it wasn't clear when we discussed this - live captions isn't a Teams Premium feature. Translation to other languages is however in Teams Premium both with captions and transcription. - Char_CheesmanBronze Contributor

- Ghizzi_dBrass ContributorUK Edu sector not at all happy about this
- Ghizzi_dBrass Contributor
I know it's not Windows but! Re the Teams Captions Public Preview:
Definitely better to be able to minimally customise the captions. But we now have 4 locations for managing STT/Captions/transcript components for users. Inconsistent, confusing and not usable.
1: More > Accessibility > Captions on/off toggle
2: More > Record and Transcribe (option to view Transcript has disappeared)
3: More > Language and Speech > Turn on/off Live captions
4: Captions box > Settings > Captions Styling menu
Additionally access to scrolling just a few recent captions, does not equate to access to scrolling the full transcript. An important function for deaf//HoH, APD and ND, notetakers, minutes managers etc. As to the last move of Accessibility from the top level More menu grr! Please make Accessibility menus top level, don't force people to click through layers to find help.
Q: My question is why can't Teams default to our Windows settings for captions styling, so that the Teams options can be a simple toggle off/on. (Should be on by default with option to toggle off).
