SharePoint Server Subscription Edition AMA
Event details
We are very excited to announce a SharePoint Server Subscription Edition AMA!
An AMA is a live text-based online event similar to a “YamJam” on Yammer or an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with Microsoft product experts who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.
Feel free to post your questions about SharePoint Server Subscription Edition anytime in the comments below beforehand, if it fits your schedule or time zone better, though questions will not be answered until the live hour.

- nguptafjcCopper ContributorIs there a self service registration method for guests to use a url link and create guest account in my tenant without going through approval? We would like the guests from a trusted partner domain to register themselves in our tenant and access public sharepoint sites freely without any restrictions.
- Aria_ConsultingBrass Contributorhttps://www.extranetusermanager.com/ Feel free to tell them I sent you 😉
- VicassomxCopper ContributorHello, I work as a solutions architect in a company called Migesa. We solve your requirement using PowerShell, but you will have to add the external user. Connect-MgGraph New-MgInvitation Connect-SPOService Add-SPOUser
- nguptafjcCopper Contributor
Add the external user where and how? All these external users are already a contact in our tenant. I sent you an offline message, please reply if you can.
- Gary_YuanCopper ContributorMy SharePoint Online site has external users. We gave external users "Contribute" access to a list. When our security team came to evaluate our site, I only gave them read access to the list. However, they can use "Proxy..." to hack the list. They believed that it's not secure to let external users write to a list, even though only authenticated external users are given "Contribute" access. My question is -- How can I let external users write to a SharePoint list without security concern? Also, I already had a custom SharePoint workflow, so that as soon as external users finish adding list items, their permission is immediately reduced to read only to the items. Still, my security team can hack the read-only list items. No sure why. Thanks. Thanks.
- Aria_ConsultingBrass ContributorCan you explain: they can use "Proxy..." more?

Hi Gary, it looks like your question is about SharePoint Online, but this AMA is focused on SharePoint server Subscription Edition. I recommend posting your question to the SharePoint Tech Commmunity at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/sharepoint/bd-p/SharePoint_General or open a support case with Microsoft Support.
- JuliaThompsonCopper ContributorAre these answers for GCC or Commercial cloud?
- TroyStarr
Microsoft
Hi Julia, this AMA focused on SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, which is the latest version of our SharePoint Server software for on-premises. It didn't cover SharePoint Online environments such as GCC. Let me know if I've misunderstood your question!- JuliaThompsonCopper Contributoryou answered my question correctly. as a Gov't customer, I am sure some of the questions/answers do not fit our install. thanks.
- Dedric TerryCopper ContributorLooking forward to using Stream on SharePoint. The current UI is just a list at the moment, will we start to see a UI more like the 'old' Stream in the future?
- Steve Zhang
Microsoft
Hi Dedric,
Thank you for raising the request. Definitely this is an opportunity to think about.
Could you please help to provide more information about why MS Stream experience is important to your SharePoint on-premises environment and how you are going to use it?
Thanks
Steve

How can we hide the social bar only on some pages?
We know how it can be done with PowerShell:
Set-SPOSite -Identity $url -SocialBarOnSitePagesDisabled $true
But apply the settings to all pages, we just want some to not have the social bar
- eokimberCopper ContributorI have many issues when trying to use MS Project and synch to a SharePoint list. I open the MPP file from the SharePoint assets page, I rarely change anything on line, preferring to use MS Project Pro. Yet, I routinely lose my timelines, get duplication of Tasks (almost all), an it is such a problem, and errors when trying to save (synch). I have just given up. Is this ever going to improve? I have been through all the articles, all the blogs and nothing helps prevent these errors.
- Aria_ConsultingBrass ContributorProject pro is designed to synch to Project Online (Project Server in the cloud hosted in SPO). While MS says you can sync with just lists I've found that to be highly....optimistic 🙄. If your licenses for Project pro are O365 licenses, then you should already have an automatically created special site collection called Project Web App (..../sites/pwa). That is Project Online. You should find much more success using that.

Hi Elaine, I suppose you are talking about the problem you have regarding Project Server right? Would you mind opening a support ticket to us? We will follow up on the ticket. Thanks Steve
- ChadHaeberleCopper ContributorWhat is the best way to migrate a subsite to its own site collection along with all document libraries and permissions if possible.
- wbaer
Microsoft
There are a couple of options here, admittedly I haven't done this in a long time. The simplest method would be to manually migrate the contents of the subsite to a new site collection; optionally, you can export your subsite by using the Export-SPWeb command, create a new site collection, and then import your Content Migration Package (.cmp) file that you exported using Import-SPWeb.- ChadHaeberleCopper ContributorThat's what I was afraid of. I have a list of about a dozen sites that are currently subsites that need to be moved with as little disruption as possible. Looks like a job that'll have to be done manually on a weekend. I was really hoping for a magical super easy "promote subsite to site collection" button. Oh well. I was actually planning on using: Get-PnPSiteTemplate -Configuration $configPath -out $filepath Any insight on what the difference would be between that and Export-SPweb?
- Henrik DamslundFrequent ReaderWill the Subscription Edition work if there is no internet connection? In an envrionment where there is absolutely no connection to the ourside world, and there can not be. Can SE be installed, and updated?
- TroyStarr
Microsoft
Hi Henrik, yes, SharePoint Server Subscription Edition can be installed, run, and updated in an environment with no Internet connection. You'd be responsible for ensuring the appropriate software prerequisites are installed since the SharePoint Prerequisite Installer wouldn't be able to download them for you. You'll also be responsible for downloading installing the monthly updates for for SPSE from https://aka.ms/sharepointupdates.
That said, functionality that depends on an Internet connection wouldn't be available. For example, no hybrid functionality would work since that requires an active Internet connection to your M365 tenant. You also won't have access to most of the online help articles in the built-in SharePoint Help feature since those are hosted on the Internet. And if you're using OneDrive Sync client to sync your documents, it would fall back to polling the farm for updates instead of receiving push notifications whenever an update occurs.

Microsoft
Yes, this version does not require an internet connection and is a full on-prem release.
- Green_ArrowCopper ContributorCould you please share your thoughts if there will be any more efforts to provide more of the SPO Modern user experience updates to SharePoint SE in the future? SP2019 received a a hefty Modern UI package, but it was - by nature - a work in progress. But with SE RTM there were very few Modern updates. One of my clients is not even interested in switching to Modern with 2019/SE because the experience is still too inconsistent, with many list templates still missing etc.

Hi Green,
Thank you for asking this question.
Previous versions of SharePoint Server like SharePoint 2019 and SharePoint 2016 were based on point-in-time "snapshots" of the SharePoint Online codebase. This approach allowed SharePoint Server to inherit many new features introduced in SPO. Unfortunately this approach has become too expensive as SPO continues to evolve with deeper integration with other Microsoft 365 services and technologies.
Our strategy for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition is to focus on the unique needs of our on-premises customers. That means SharePoint Server Subscription Edition isn't based on a new snapshot of the SharePoint Online codebase, and our goal isn't to achieve feature parity with SharePoint Online. SharePoint Online and SharePoint Server will now evolve independently of each other, while maintaining our ability to successfully migrate customers from on-premises to the cloud when they're ready.
How will we focus on the unique needs of our on-premises customers? By engaging with the SharePoint community to better understand why you're using SharePoint Server and what your most critical needs are. In addition to the direct conversations we've always had with customers, we're also listening to the SharePoint community in places such as the SharePoint Tech Community, the SharePoint Feedback Portal, Reddit, Discord, and others. We hope you'll continue to share your feedback with us to better understand what you need and why.
I've just made a post regarding the new features we are planning to release in later this year. Modern experience improvements will happen in document library and list. In another reply to the question of SharePoint Framework, I also mentioned that we are in the progress of updating SPFx to a newer version. So yes, we are picking critical modern needs into consideration. So please feel free to let us know what are the modern features you need with more information about why you need them in which scenarios to solve what problems. It will greatly help us to understand the importance and urgency and help us to prioritize them.
Thanks
Steve
- FredrikLundellCopper ContributorReally good post (and question) Steve! This information I believe would be of good value to clarify through the TAP program. The way you describe it creates a easy to understand balance between SPO and SE when it comes to features in general and Modern UI specifically.

How do I perform a SystemUpdate on a ListItem using REST? Currently I am creating a CSOM Request XML-paylaod and posting it to https://<domainname>.sharepoint.com/<path-to-site>/_api/ProcessQuery, but that is rather cumbersome.
