An AMA is a live text-based online event similar to a “YamJam” on Yammer or an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with Microsoft product experts who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.
Feel free to post your questions about Microsoft Search anytime in the comments below beforehand, if it fits your schedule or time zone better, though questions will not be answered until the live hour.

- WvStrienIron ContributorClarify positioning of Microsoft Search on one side, and/versus Azure (Cognitive) Search on the other

At a high level, Microsoft Search indexes the content in M365 and is targeted for "enterprise search". Azure Cognitive Search is for content that is hosted in Azure, and for scenarios that require a deeper level of customization. We do recognize that a lot of customers want the content in Azure to be searched as part of their enterprise search portal, and we have a private preview where you can federated in results from Azure. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftsearch/manage-azure-cognitive-search - wbaer

Hi William. We see the differences between Microsoft Search and Azure Cognitive Service, both as persona and use case. Microsoft search enables unified search capability within the Microsoft 365 productivity apps and broader Microsoft ecosystem. Microsoft search helps users find the right answers, people, and content to complete their tasks in the app they’re already working in. Over time, Microsoft search will be available in more apps across Microsoft 365. With Microsoft search: Azure Search is a Search-as-a-Service (SaaS) cloud solution that gives developers Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools to add a rich search experience over private, heterogenous content in Web, mobile, and enterprise apps. Azure Search exposes functionality through a simple REST API or .NET SDK that masks the inherent complexity of information retrieval: You could further simplify to where is the data? Microsoft Search reasons over data that is in or ingested in Microsoft 365 whereas ACS reasons over data in or ingested in Data Lake or other Azure data stores. Near term, we'll offer federated search over the two so it becomes an 'and' versus 'or' discussion (I.e. better together).- WvStrienIron ContributorThanks for extended positioning. I am however confused on the MS Search positioning as “that is in or ingested in M365”; are you with “ingested” refering to data from non Office 365 systems that are via a Graph Connector crawled and the data included in M365 Search Index? And do I understand correctly as a difference aspect that MS Search is a ready-to-use service (but can qua scope be customized via configuration), and Azure Search is more a search platform to build own specific search solution in?
- MElkinsAWBrass ContributorCurrently using the heck out of the PMP Modern Search web parts. Will new search filters do away with the need for those? We make extensive use of search refiners. Also, like the opportunity to switch display formats as well depending on the need.
- KasperLarsenIron Contributornot likely. It will take year for MS Search to reach the same level
- MElkinsAWBrass ContributorBummer... Also need to have something that's compliant with CMMC, etc. It's an issue for some clients.
- Sandeep_GudivadaBrass ContributorWe noticed that the MS Search is not supporting the Non-English language content in the search results. Please provide us some information on the support of non-english language data in search results
- Ajla_Badza
Microsoft
Hi Sandeep, could you help us understand a bit more which feature exactly is not supported for non-English languages. Most of the features should be supported in non-English, so trying to understand if it is a bug, or maybe a feature that we have missing.- Sandeep_GudivadaBrass ContributorWe have few articles in SNow build on Chinese language and when users search with the KBA number, they see the results. But, the display information is not in chinese language but in a different language..
- eromerommcIron ContributorYes I notice the same on our tenant- I did a test and changed my language settings to Spanish for example, and then I was able to find the spanish articles
- Allison BatesBrass ContributorWhat is the status of this announcement from Nov. 2021 https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-search-blog/profile-customization-with-aad-and-microsoft-graph-connectors/ba-p/2914099 regarding "Profile customization with AAD and Microsoft Graph connectors" Very much needed,
- BrianTJackett
Microsoft
No official announcements at this time. We are working with the Graph connector and People Profile teams on the all-up strategy for this and will have more to share in the future.
- Dan MyhreIron ContributorWhen is search going to get better refiners? We had to take a big step backwards from what we had in 2013. File type and last modified doesn't cut it for users. We do annual surveys of our intranet and search is always one of the largest complaints since moving to SPO. Refiners, scoping, proper ranking - all some of the top issues that contribute to users wishing our intranet "could be more like google"...i know, I hate hearing it too 🙂
- pjhermanCopper ContributorWe took a look at pnp-modern search but had some challenges getting the interface to look good. Refiners listed all file types instead of just a finite list. The on-premise refiner experience was soo much better than online would be nice if they could add this capability to modern search. We should not have to use a custom solution to get something that previously existed in on-premise IMO.
- KasperLarsenIron ContributorI am using PnP Modern search web part on a daily basis and once I got used to handlebars ( and now Adaptive Cards) I find the PnP version way better than the out of the search web parts from SP2013. Re the refiners listing all file types, that sound like you either should update the the search query or that you expect some kind of grouping of file type ?
- MElkinsAWBrass ContributorHave you looked at the PnP Modern Search Refiners? https://microsoft-search.github.io/pnp-modern-search/
- Dan MyhreIron ContributorWe did, but were not impressed or looking to have to implement and support something custom. It also doesn't cover all of the search experiences, so it was kind of a non-starter. These basic things need to native in the OOTB product.
- Charles GimonCopper ContributorFor what it's worth, we were on Google Search Appliance for several years while that was a product.....and we had people telling us it should be "more like Google", too!
- Dan MyhreIron Contributorhaha - we used to have that too...luckily that is long gone

Hello Alex, this is a live text-based AMA, so any questions you have can be asked in a comment here, and our experts are on hand to comment back and answer your questions.- Alex LushIron ContributorOK thanks. Was expecting a Teams event! Should learn to read properly!
- eromerommcIron ContributorNot sure- is this maybe a text based live event- was reading this in description--->An AMA is a live text-based online event similar to a “YamJam” on Yammer or an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit.
- KasperLarsenIron Contributorand I have no idea what a AMA on Reddit or a YamJam is 😉
- dmorawetzCopper ContributorI am looking forward to customizing search results from Sharepoint. I read there is currently a private preview, where registration is closed. Any updates on when this will be available for all of us?
- KasperLarsenIron ContributorCustomized SharePoint results are availble on my O365 Dev tenant :-), and it is great 🙂
- Kathrine Hammervold
Microsoft
Thanks for the interest in customizing search results. This feature is scheduled for Targeted Release in September 2022. I will send you a private message with regards to how you might be able to join the preview program.
- KasperLarsenIron ContributorThe current limit of 5 refinable strings in e.g the Azure SQL Graph connector is an issue. Anything on the roadmap for that ?
- KasperLarsenIron ContributorHi, love the focus Search is getting 🙂 Quick question: are you planning to add an audience option (or similar) to search verticals? I have loads of verticals, and most of them are only relevent for a specific group of people.
- ericdixonCopper ContributorHi Kasper, We are looking into audience-based search verticals and additional ways manage search verticals in general, but this is not prioritized for this year. I'll make sure your feedback is heard by the Product Group. Thanks for your input.
- KasperLarsenIron Contributorwould it make sense or just look weird if the vertical would be hidden when the search return 0 results ?
