Track changes by author doesn't work

Hi -- I set up By Author, clicked "Always use these values regardless of sign in..." but my changes and the other author are both the same color.  Help please?

I do not see your attachment, so it appears that the upload failed.

Could you link to the sample document instead? You'd have to put it in OneDrive first (or some other file sharing site). Remember to generate a download link.

I cldn’t download my document from One Drive — when I click Share or One Drive > Manage access, I get the message:  “The link can’t be sent because at least one recipient isn’t valid.” !!

However, when I click One Drive > View online — the document shows two different colors, one for my husband, one for me!!  Finally!!  Yay!!  Does “By author” function only when a document is shared via OneDrive or SharePoint, but not when a Word document is simply sent as an attachment?

"By author" should work even when you send your document as an attachment.

However, note that attachments often open in protected view, if you open them directly from an e-mail. Protected view won't necessarily provide a correct view of the document content. Instead, download the document, find it in File Explorer, right-click and choose Properties; in the Properties window, click Unblock and then click Apply. Open the document in Word and verify that the display is correct.

  • To share the document, or a representative sample, upload it to OneDrive (for example) and post a download link in this thread.

Or you can try the Attachment icon in the Reply window.

    Teaching Scenario:  Hamlet

Test insert.  [<THAT TO THE LEFT IS MY HUSBAND’S EDIT] As class  begins, high-school English teacher Sherry Zweitach  reminds her students about last night’s unconventional homework assignment:  “I asked you to write a paragraph or two about the three chief blessings in your life, making clear why they are in fact blessings. Who would be willing to read what you’ve written?”   THIS AND THE ABOVE IN BRACKETS ARE MY EDITS

    ***

I cldn't find a way to insert this sample with color.  But the first line -- from "Test insert" (my husband's edit) to the end bracket, and the last sentence (all caps) are all in red on my screen.

  • Is this Word for Windows? You have to display the Advanced Track Changes Options dialog box and specify the "By author" options wherever possible. In particular, you would want to choose that option for Insertions and Deletions.

To display the dialog box, click the dialog launcher icon on the bottom right of the Markup group on the Review tab and click Advanced Options.

Thanks.  I had clicked By Author on all three of the Advanced Options boxes and the Markup still doesn’t change color.  Also Microsoft gave me a case number when tech support cldn’t help me:  Case ID: 7070480226.  Thanks again though.

Colors won't necessarily change, because Word decides which specific colors to assign (more or less at random). There is no way to instruct Word which colors to use.

However, you should see different colors for different user names / reviewers.
