Track changes by author doesn't work
I cldn’t download my document from One Drive — when I click Share or One Drive > Manage access, I get the message: “The link can’t be sent because at least one recipient isn’t valid.” !!
However, when I click One Drive > View online — the document shows two different colors, one for my husband, one for me!! Finally!! Yay!! Does “By author” function only when a document is shared via OneDrive or SharePoint, but not when a Word document is simply sent as an attachment?

"By author" should work even when you send your document as an attachment.
However, note that attachments often open in protected view, if you open them directly from an e-mail. Protected view won't necessarily provide a correct view of the document content. Instead, download the document, find it in File Explorer, right-click and choose Properties; in the Properties window, click Unblock and then click Apply. Open the document in Word and verify that the display is correct.

Looking at your document, only one editor is recognized: Carol Shookhoff. On the Review tab, click Show Markup and then click Specific People.

Hi -- Thanks. In Properties the only options were Read-Only [wh was checked], Hidden, and Advanced > Allow indexing. I unclicked Read-Only and Apply but when i opened the document in Word, Edit Mode still shows David's changes and mine in the same color. On the Tool bar, under Protect, "Block Authors" is grayed out.
