those annoying ~$ files

My Word (using Mac Sonoma) leaves behind these ~$ files. They are supposed to be temporary, but they look like files I was last dealing with months ago. They are NOT temporary. I wanted to clean them up, and rm ~$* doesn't do the trick. What works well is rm -i './~$'* . Go figure.

Now, WHY are these files getting left behind by Word and polluting my Desktop folder?

OK, the issue is that a simple "rm ~$*" doesn't delete them. What works is this - "rm -i './~$'*". Kind of a PIA.

This is really an Apple question rather than a Word question.

Again, storing documents on your desktop is almost always a bad idea.

  • Occasionally, temporary files may be left behind. When it happens, the cause is normally that Word or the computer stopped responding. It is safe to delete them, but a restart of your computer may be required.

Are you saving document on your desktop?

This is almost always a bad idea, if for no other reason than that you then have a cluttered desktop.
