Style separators and export as .pdf
Dear Microsoft Community,
I currently am writing my thesis - and thus I use a lot of style separators for my figures and tables.
As my committee would rather want the file as a PDF, I wanted to export it as such. Unfortunately, when exporting as a pdf the style separators are all treated as a line break, which significantly distorts my whole thesis by shuffling around pages back and forth.
Is there a way to export the word "as is"? I would love it if the table of contents remains a hyperlink as well as being able to have the table also in PDF.
The normal export does not word, nor does the export via pdf24 work.
Best,
Julian

Deathbird What is the purpose of the Style Separators?
When the Save as PDF option is used in Word, a properly constructed Table of Contents in the Word document will be functional in the resulting PDF.
If you upload a copy of the document, we will investigate any issues that you have.
- DeathbirdCopper ContributorDoug_Robbins_Word_MVP - I use them as otherwise in the figure or legend list I would get the whole legend, albeit I just need the short name at the start.
As I wrote as a response to Stefan_Blom, it seems the issue comes from having the legend inside a table. I was able to solve the issue by non-selecting "Export Document Properties" when exporting as PDF - although I'm not sure if that causes other issues...Deathbird Re the Style Separators, make sure that under File>Options>Display>Printing options, you do NOT have the box checked for "Print hidden text".
Which version of Word are you running?
Here, using Word 2021 for Windows, the style separator works as expected when I convert via File > Save As > Browse and choose PDF for file type. See the screen shot below (the original Word document is on the left and the resulting PDF is on the right, opened in Adobe Reader).

I use Word 365 - with the latest updates.
Interestingly, if I do it the same as you it works. It may be connected that my figures are actually embedded into a table, and so is the respective legend that uses the style separator. Style separators outside of tables work perfectly fine...
In addition, when I export the file as PDF with markups, it also works as it should (but you get all the comments)
I actually found a solution by non-selecting "Export Document Properties" - although I'm not sure if that causes other issues...
Thanks for the follow-up.
I am not seeing an issue with table cells either.
However, it is known that style separators and tables are a bit tricky. For example, you can't easily insert a style separator into a table cell using the Ctrl+Alt+Enter shortcut; you'd have to insert it elsewhere and then copy and paste it into the table.
