Side Bar Index

I'd like to create a ln Edge (side-bar) index in a large document. In my mind it looks a little like the lovechild of the 'find in page' bar in Chrome, where the grey bar shows you how far the document you are, and the edge index on a multi lingual instruction manual, where the languages are typed in light grey on the side of the page, but black for the section that matches the language.

I've worked out the edge index using section breaks for each chapter and colouring in the edge index for the chapter you are in, but I'm stuck on the progress bar... In Excel you can use a cell attribute, can you do this in Word with page number?

  • Microsoft Word does not include a native feature for displaying a progress bar based on page numbers. While it is possible to insert page numbers or use the “Page X of Y” format in headers and footers, Word does not provide a visual progress indicator comparable to conditional formatting in Excel or the scroll bar in Chrome. The closest available functionality is the use of page numbering and section breaks, which can be formatted creatively to approximate a sense of progress.
