How to clear cache on iphone to free up more space

I have an iPhone 13 that I've been using for a couple of years, and I'm down to just 5GB of free space. I already deleted unused apps and old photos, but storage is still tight. I know Android phones have a straightforward way to clear app cache, but on iOS, it seems less obvious.

How do I specifically clear cache on iphone? What actually works to clear cached streams, temporary files, and old message attachments? I prefer not to do a full factory reset unless it's the last option.

Thanks!

Before clearing cache on iPhone, especially if you're doing a full cache reset or clearing app data, back up important information. This prevents data loss in case something goes wrong.

No single "Clear All Cache" button exists on iPhone — this is intentional by Apple to prevent accidental data loss. Clearing cache on iPhone without deleting data (Like photos, messages, or contacts — those are completely separate.)

For most people, clearing Safari cache once a month and restarting your phone weekly is enough. Only clear app caches when you notice performance issues or low storage.

After using your iPhone 13 for a couple of years, those temporary files and old message attachments really add up. The good news is that you don't need a factory reset. You just need to know where iOS hides these options.

Here is a most effective method to clear cache on iPhone without deleting data:

If you've had your iPhone for years, your Messages app is likely the culprit. Every photo, video, or GIF sent or received is saved on your phone until you manually delete it. This often takes up 5-10GB+ without you realizing it.

    • Targeted Cleanup (Recommended): Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Wait for the list to load, then tap Messages.
    • You will see categories like "Photos," "Videos," and "GIFs & Stickers."
    • Tap Photos (or Videos), tap Edit in the top-right corner, select the heavy files, and tap the delete button. This clears the files without deleting the actual text conversation.
    • Set Auto-Delete: To stop this from happening again, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Message History. Change "Keep Messages" from Forever to 30 Days.

Clearing cache within specific apps on an iPhone can help improve performance and free up storage space without deleting data. Unlike Android devices, iOS doesn't provide a universal "clear cache" button for all apps, but many apps have built-in options or settings to clear cached data.

Here’s how you can clear cache on iPhone without deleting data within specific apps:

    1. Check App Settings:

    • Some apps, such as social media or streaming apps, have their own settings to clear cache. Open the app, go to its Settings or Privacy section, and look for options like Clear Cache or Reset Cache.

    2. Reinstall the App:

    • If the app doesn’t have a built-in cache clearing option, you can delete the app and then reinstall it from the App Store.
    • This process effectively clears the cache but allows you to keep your data if it's stored in the cloud or tied to your account.
    • To do this without losing important data, make sure your app data is backed up or synced with your account.

    3. Use Offload App:

    • Another method is to offload the app via Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
    • Offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data.
    • Reinstalling the app afterward can help clear temporary cache files while preserving your data.

By following these approaches, you can clear cache on iPhone without deleting data within specific apps, helping optimize device performance while keeping your important information safe.

When you want to clear cache on iPhone without deleting data, you need to consider not only app cache but also browser cache, which can take up a significant amount of space on your device.

Browser cache, also known as browsing history or temporary internet files, is a collection of data stored by your browser, such as images, website data, and cookies. This cache helps your browser load websites faster by storing frequently accessed data locally on your device. However, as it accumulates over time, it can consume a substantial amount of storage space.

Step 1. To clear cache on iPhone without deleting data, follow these steps:

Step 2. Open Safari (or any other browser you're using, such as Chrome or Firefox): Go to the home screen and tap on the Safari app icon (or the icon of the browser you're using).

Step 3. Tap on 'Tabs': In the bottom-right corner of the screen, tap on the 'Tabs' icon (represented by two overlapping rectangles).

Step 4. Select 'Private': Tap on the 'Private' tab, which will open a new window with a blank page.

Step 5. Go to Settings: Tap on the 'AA' icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen to go to the browser settings.

Step 6. Clear Browsing Data: Scroll down and tap on 'Clear Browsing Data.'

Step 7. Select 'Cache': Choose the type of data you want to clear, which in this case is 'Cache.'

Step 8. Confirm: Tap on 'Clear Now' to confirm that you want to clear the browser cache.

Clearing cache on iPhone can be achieved through various methods, and one of them is using the Offloading feature. This process involves clearing the app cache while also removing any unused data or resources associated with the app.

To clear cache on iPhone via Offloading:

    1. Go to the Settings app.
    2. Select General.
    3. Scroll down and tap on iPhone Storage.
    4. You will see a list of all installed apps on your device. Look for the app for which you want to clear cache on iPhone.
    5. Tap on Offload App. This will remove the app from your device and free up storage space. However, if you want to keep the app's data intact, you can instead choose Offload App & Data, which will remove the app but keep its associated data.
    6. Once the app is offloaded, you can reinstall it from the App Store. This will re-download the app and its data, but the cache will be cleared.

Note: The Offloading feature is not the same as deleting an app. Offloading an app does not remove its data, but instead, it removes the app's binary code and frees up storage space. However, if you reinstall the app, it will re-download the binary code, and the data will also be re-downloaded if you chose to keep it during offloading.
