Windows 24H2 update stuck at 90%?

During the Windows 11 24H2 version update process, the progress bar remained stuck at 90% and could not continue, with no response even after waiting for a long time.

  • If you've external devices connected, that could also contribute to delay upgrade process. Ensure to disconnect them while upgrading.

Of course. Here are the most effective short-term solutions:

First, be patient. Updates at 90% often involve major file operations and can take a very long time, especially on older or slower drives. Give it at least 2-3 hours.

If it's truly stuck, the best course of action is to force a restart:

Hold down the power button for 10 seconds until the PC shuts down.

Turn it back on. Windows Update will likely fail to complete, roll back the changes, and revert to your previous version.

Once back on your desktop, troubleshoot before trying again:

Run the Update Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run it for Windows Update.

Free up disk space: Ensure you have at least 20-30 GB of free space.

Disconnect peripherals: Unplug any non-essential devices (printers, external drives, USB hubs) before restarting the update.

After pausing the update, restart the system, clear the C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources folder, and re-download the update, or use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant to upgrade directly.
