Why can a nearly empty drive still have very little free space?
My external drive shows as nearly empty with only a few folders visible, yet Windows reports that less than 5% of the total capacity remains available as free space. I have already enabled viewing of hidden and system files, but I cannot find what is consuming the storage, and I need to understand why this discrepancy exists and how to recover the missing space without formatting the entire drive.

The file system is corrupted. Windows can't read it, which can cause space to appear used but inaccessible.
This folder contains System Restore points and Volume Shadow Copies. If the external drive has ever been used for backups or had system protection enabled, this folder can consume a large portion of the drive's space . By default, you cannot see its contents.
