Taskbar icons keep getting smaller

My taskbar icons keep getting smaller. They are getting so small they are difficult to make out. This has happened in stages. I have not changed my scale settings, which are the recommended ones. Everything else displayed has remained as it was. Only the taskbar icons have changed. There is no direct taskbar scale setting in Windows 11. What could cause this weird behavior? How can I fix it?

  • I actually found the answer and I have discovered the solution to your problem, because I had that same issue myself. if you go to the taskbar settings, and you open “taskbar behaviours” in "personalization."  there is a section called "show smaller task buttons, and if it was set to "when taskbar is full" change it to "never" and you should be good to go.

If taskbar icons shrink on their own, it’s usually a registry or system glitch.

    1. Restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager.

    2. In Registry Editor, go to
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
→ set TaskbarSi = 1 for default size.

    3. Restart PC and install the latest Windows updates.

Right-click on the taskbar → Taskbar settings → Turn off the small taskbar button, or adjust the display zoom ratio in Settings → System → Display → Zoom and layout. Try it out.

Thanks, but the problem is something else. The icons switch between the regular size and the miniature size at seemingly random times. Like right now, they are at the right size., But they won't stay that way. Anyone else familiar with the switching of sizes?

Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar Behaviors > Show smaller taskbar buttons > Never.

You have it set to "When taskbar is full" which is why it's switching.
