'Show Recently Used Files' unchecks itself after saving settings.

Hello, I am trying to view recently used files on my computer, and I have found that if I go to file explorer, click on the ellipses, select options, and check the 'Show recently used files' box inside of the general tab, the box will uncheck itself after I click 'Apply' and close the options window. Looking more into this, I have also noticed that my Activity History is completely blank, even though I have 'Store my activity history on this device' set to on. Not sure if related, but I have looked everywhere to see if there was a fix for this, and am coming up empty handed. Any Ideas?

  • I was having the same problem on a beta build of Windows 11 24H2, and I was able to resolve it with turning on "Show recommended files in Start, recent files in File Explorer, and items in Jump Lists" in Settings > Personalization > Start.

Mine still defaults back to being unchecked - I have already have that section switched on however I noticed it is greyed out.  I am at a loss and its so frustrating.

I have 2 laptops running the exact same setup

My older laptop was windows 10 and I upgraded it to windows 11 (this one works fine and checkbox stays ticked and below is turned on but not greyed out)

My new Laptop is fresh out of the box and windows 11 installed [Never had windows 10 on it] however I am having the same issue as OP is on this laptop - Please help

Ensure your system is fully updated, as patches may resolve known issues. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and check for updates.
