Onedrive issues on Windows 11
I have updated my windows to 11 (build 22000.132) and I am experiencing an issue on OneDrive. When I open the file explorer and click on the OneDrive folders, it takes long time to open my folders and sometimes it even freezes. Every time I click on the folder, it appears to be loading (as the mouse cursor would become a little small blue circle). Even tough I keep my folders and files on my local drive, the issue still persists. The folder loading behavior is normal on other non-OneDrive related folders in my local drives.
I experienced similar issues on my NAS-related folders and I suspect this issues would exist in network drives.

SOLVED for me: Press F11 to enter File Explorer full-screen, which disables the new-style File Explorer menu bar. Navigation gets a lot snappier.
Why does this happen? Something something about OneDrive and/or the new File Explorer menu bar.
My computer: Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio, Windows 11. 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce RTX3050. OneDrive running.

- nbird22Iron ContributorThis doesnt fix it for me, its still laggy
- cw_msCopper Contributorhave the same problem... and the problem persists even after i rollback to windows 10. I have even downloaded all the contents in the folder onto the PC, but still no luck.

Nice workaround, it seems more responsive in fullscreen. Before this I tried nearly everything (reinstalling onedrive, windows 11 reset) but nothing seems to be a real solution to that. Moreover my OneDrive clients (personal and business) are both using a lot of CPU without reason.
Definitely the worst Windows Upgrade in my life (and I expirenced the ones for WinME and Vista...)

HoneyPercent This works for me. I'm on Windows 11 Version 21H2, OS Build 22000.258. Anyway, if you pause the sync function, file explorer will just operate as smooth as usual.
This issue also perhaps have something to do with option "Save space and download files as you use them" in OneDrive Settings. I have two drives, one of them running with that enabled and the other disabled. If I pause the drive with that option disabled, file explorer will operate normally, while on the other hand, the drive with that option enabled doesn't seem to affect file explorer's performance at all, whether it is paused or not.

This is an issue for me as well. I upgraded from Win10 to Win11 at the weekend. Noticed the slow Windows Explorer issue and eventually tracked it down to OneDrive being the culprit. I am running both a personal OneDrive and business OneDrive.
The only work around I've found to get Explorer back working is to:
* Clean reboot and login
* Wait for all startup process to settle down
* Wait for both my OneDrive icons to finish syncing
* Right-click and Close OneDrive on both icons in the notification tray
* Start a Windows Explorer session and ensure speed is back to normal
* Start the OneDrive App manually
Explorer seems to behave now until the next reboot.
Hoping there is a fix coming soon for this... I use Explorer extensively.

Had the same exact issue immediately after upgrading to Windows 11 today. I've actually uninstalled the existing OneDrive app (Control Panel> Programs and Features) then downloaded and installed the version available here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/microsoft-365/onedrive/download
The issue seems resolved for now. Not the smoothest experience imo, but much better than what it was - boosterx78Copper ContributorI opened a case using my premier support (I reffered to this post) and they confirmed they are working on a fix --> will keep you in touch
Anyway, for me no workaround is acceptable.
I can also mention that the slowness is increased if you use personnal onedrive + pro onedrive (nightmare) - SoWhat007Copper Contributor
In the christmas time I tried install windows 11 on two of my laptop. I have a trick that work well since two month on developer version but I can confirm it work well too on de public version.
1. You need to add this registry key to have W10 file explorer bar
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked]
"{e2bf9676-5f8f-435c-97eb-11607a5bedf7}"=""2. Reboot explorer task or your computer to have Windows 10 explorer ribbon
3. Minimize ribbon in file explorer (see picture)
4. Reboot explorer task or your computer
I work all days long with onedrive with ± 50 000 files shared and this trick work very well for me.
If you roll down the ribbon, the problem come back and you need to roll up again and close the windows and open a new explorer windows
Escuse my english 🙂

This is the most comprehensive thread on the issue I've could find. I've just upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and looks like I'm on the same boat.
I am running Windows 11 22H2 Build 22621.160 and OneDrive Build 22.116.0529.0003 64-bit. I'm enrolled in the Insider program.
- Start the PC, OneDrive Personal shows up on the system tray as a dashed cloud icon stating it is Not signed in. Left or right clicking on it gives nothing.
- I've noticed that the Widgets item on the Taskbar doesn't load up correctly until OneDrive manages to sign in. I cannot open the widgets menu and whereas the icon itself usually display relevant info about the current weather, in this state it's a blank greyed out generic icon with no info. Left or right clicking on it, as well as hovering the mouse over it, gives nothing.
- Same, cannot use the Snipping Tool via the keyboard shortcut (Win + Shift + S) and though I can open the app through the Start Menu, clicking on the + New button to manually take a snap gives me nothing;
- Trying to open the Feedback Hub while in this state also won't work. The window with the splash screen pops up, stays there for a while, then disappears with no warning.
- Windows Explorer I won't even mention. It's exactly what you guys are/were going through and running it in Full Screen mode (F11) is the only way to get a serviceable experience.
All these issues are somehow fixed or improved when OneDrive manages to sign in. I used to get it to do so by manually ending the task via Task Manager and relaunching the app on the Start Menu. Another way was to open the Run dialog box and execute:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
This would get OneDrive to go through its sync index again but doesn't affect the local files and would jump start the app back to function again.
The .bat file that dazuk suggested seemed like a great idea. At first I just had to fix the path since this:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe
would give me an error message. Instead I used "C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe". However, when booting the system it would say it could not shutdown the task and that I would have to do so manually.
After a while, even manually terminating the OneDrive task in Task Manager wouldn't work. It would end alright, but reopening the app would not get it to sign in.
All this time I noticed that Microsoft Windows Search Indexer would also be running on the background. Every minute search I did wherever would warn me that I should turn it on for better results, and opening the Indexing Options would register the service as paused. Decided to terminate the task in Task Manager and voila, everything blinked and in an instant the Widgets loaded up, the Snipping Tool would jolt awake and the previous snap requests would finally register, and OneDrive signed it!
This is a mess. It's June 2022 and it's still a mess.
- RageXCopper ContributorI've been having the exact same issue since I upgraded to 22H2 a couple of days ago. Onedrive is not signed in on startup, and the Windows startup duration has lengthened considerably. To fix this I have to restart file explorer using the task manager on every startup. I'm hoping someone has a fix out there.
- RobQ_MVPIron ContributorI had the same problem but seems to be resolved in latest build 22000.160. If you still experience on this this build (avail in Beta and Dev) then log it, if you haven't on the feedback hub.

Thanks for your information. The issue was resolved after I tried a clean install.RobQ_MVP
- stitchtamaCopper ContributorDid you do a clean install of Windows or onedrive?
- Snehal_ChauhanCopper ContributorI am still facing this issue with Build 22000.376
- stitchtamaCopper ContributorI'm still having this issue, it started today after an update. It takes around 1 minute every time I click in any file that is in a One Drive folder. I'm in version 22000.1 and when I check for updates it says I'm up to date.
- stitchtamaCopper Contributor
I'm on 22000.184 and still having this issue. I'm starting to freak out as I'm unable to work properly.
- Julien HACQUARDCopper Contributor
Same here on an update install and then a factory reset with reinstallation of Windows 11 without keep the personal files and apps. Build 22000.184
Really hard to work with OneDrive in these conditions. I'm sad and consider coming back to Windows 10 until a real fix is available.Regards,
- stitchtamaCopper ContributorI was able to solve it by a reset without keeping files. It was sad I had to g through that to solve it.
- olavrbBrass ContributorI'm experiencing this too. Upgrade from 21H1. I don't want to clean install and set it up from scratch.
I'm on 2200.194. Have tried "sfc /scannow", "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth".
Procmon spams a lot of entries when arrow down in a list of folders that is inside OneDrive, generated by explorer.exe.
Hope it get's fixed soon. Will tell if I find a fix that does not involve reinstall.
