Laptop hinge becomes stiff or makes cracking sounds

This is a hardware problem, not a Windows 11 setting. The hinge may be seizing, or its mounting points may be pulling away from the back cover or laptop chassis.

1. Stop repeatedly opening and closing the screen. Leave it at a comfortable angle if possible.
2. Shut down the laptop, unplug the charger, and check for gaps around the hinge, bezel or bottom cover.
3. Back up important files while the laptop is still usable.
4. Check the warranty and arrange service with the manufacturer or a repair shop. The hinge, mounting brackets or damaged cover may need replacement.
5. Stop using the screen immediately if it begins separating, flickering or going blank.

Do not spray WD-40 or other lubricant into the hinge. It can reach the electronics and will not repair broken mounting points. Repairing it early is usually cheaper than waiting until the cover or display cable is damaged.

The plastic or metal backing of the display is often the weakest point. A stiff hinge can cause the plastic mounting points to shear off, making the screen wobble or even separate from the hinge entirely.

If the hinge is getting stiff or starting to crack, I wouldn’t force it or keep opening the lid one-handed. That can eventually damage the hinge mounts or even the display cable. Best to get the hinge checked early, especially if the sound is getting worse.
